ARAG World Team Cup newcomer Serbia took out host nation Germany to win the championships on Saturday.
Viktor Troicki def. Rainer Schuettler 6-4, 7-6(5)
Viktor Troicki landed the first point of the tie between Serbia and Germany Saturday afternoon, dismissing veteran Rainer Schuettler in just under two hours of play. Troicki saved all four of the break points against him in the opening set, securing a key break of the Schuettler serve at 4-4. The 23-year-old struggled a bit on second serve, winning six of 14 points. The Serb did well on his first, however, snagging 70% of the points. Troicki led early in the second set, reaching 5-4 to serve for the match. Schuettler, broken twice on the day, pocketed a break of serve to level the match at 5-5. The two players remained close in the second-set tie break, with Troicki winning the last two points to seal the victory.
Janko Tipsarevic def. Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-2, 6-4
Janko Tipsarevic put the WTC title out of reach for Germany, knocking out tournament standout Philipp Kohlschreiber in reverse singles, 6-2, 6-4. Tipsarevic looked solid at the start, collecting two breaks of the Kohlschreiber serve. The 24-year-old faced only one break point in the opening set as he won a stellar 100% of his first-service points. Tipsarevic held all four of his service games, taking the first set in 36 minutes. The Serb quickly built a two-break lead in the second set, pushing his advantage to 5-2. Tipsarevic stumbled serving for the match, but went on to close at 6-4 after 74 minutes of play.
Nicolas Kiefer and Mischa Zverev salvaged one point on Saturday, besting Troick and teammate Nenad Zimonjic in doubles. Serbia completed the day 2-1 in the tie with Germany, thus winning its maiden trip to the World Team Cup in Dusseldorf.
