Philipp Kohlschreiber and Janko Tipsarevic notch key wins in singles at the WTC on Friday. Host nation Germany and Serbia each secure their respective top spot in group competition.
Philipp Kohlschreiber def. Andreas Vinciguerra 6-1, 6-2 (Red Group)
Philipp Kohlschreiber needed just 71 minutes to defeat Andreas Vinciguerra in straight sets on Friday afternoon. The German leveled the tie with Sweden at 1-1 after compatriot Rainer Schuettler fell to Robin Soderling on Thursday, 6-0, 6-0.
Kohlschreiber turned in a rock-solid performance on serve, saving all five of the break points against him. The world No. 31, never facing break point in the second set, went on to secure four of 12 break-point opportunities on the day. Kohlschreiber finished the match capturing 26 of 32 points on his first serve. Friday’s triumph marks the third singles victory for the 25-year-old this week.
Germany defeated defending champion Sweden 2-1 as Nicolas Kiefer and Mischa Zverev knocked out Robin Soderling and Robert Lindstedt in doubles.
Janko Tipsarevic def. Francesco Piccari 6-2, 6-3 (Blue Group)
Janko Tipsarevic kept championship hopes burning for Serbia, dismissing Italian Francesco Piccari on Friday. First-time entrant Serbia trailed Italy 1-0 heading into reverse singles following Viktor Troicki’s 6-1, 6-4 loss to Andreas Seppi on Thursday afternoon.
Tipsarevic looked strong on serve, striking five aces during the 73-minute match. The 24-year-old surrendered serve only once, pocketing five of nine break-point chances. Tipsarevic completed the match winning 60% of his first-serve points and 81% of his second. The Serb is 2-1 in singles competition for the week.
Nenad Zimonjic and Troicki clinched a 2-1 victory for Serbia, winning their doubles match over Seppi and Piccari.
