Julien Benneteau, Oscar Hernandez and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez will join Mikhail Youzhny in the Austrian Open’s semifinals.
Lucky loser Julien Benneteau has advanced all the way to the semifinals in Kitzbuhel. The Frenchman defeated Austria’s own Daniel Koellerer in three topsy-turvy sets. Benneteau won the first set easily with a 6-2 scoreline. Koellerer made a push in the second set. The Austrian fought off 3 break points to force a second set tiebreaker.
Koellerer just squeaked out the tiebreaker with one minibreak, but he completely lost the plot in the third set. Benneteau fed Koellerer a bagel as he rolled through the deciding set.
Two Spaniards will be joining Benneteau on Friday. Oscar Hernandez took care of Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Chela in straight sets. The win marks the first semifinal appearance for the Spaniard in 2009. Countryman Guillermo Garcia-Lopez will also appear in his first semifinal on Friday also. Garcia-Lopez had a surprisingly easy win over Romanian Victor Hanescu in the quarterfinals.
