    5/21/09 6:59 AM | Kelli DeMario
WTC - Germany, Sweden battle for Red Group top spot Robin Soderling and Rainer Schuettler are set for a marquee Red Group singles clash on Thursday. Juan Martin Del Potro will battle Igor Andreev in Blue Group competition.

Robin Soderling vs. Rainer Schuettler (Red Group decider)

Tournament standout Robin Soderling takes to the court against Rainer Schuettler on Thursday afternoon. The world No. 25 continues to impress in singles this week, notching wins over Frenchman Gilles Simon and American Sam Querrey. Sweden, a winner in 1988, 1991, 1995 and 2008, captured 2-1 ties over both France and the United States. Host nation Germany marches into the decider riding a wave of confidence after sweeping the French team 3-0. Germany won its opening round with the United States 2-1. Schuettler lost a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 heartbreaker to Querrey, but rebounded nicely with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of world No. 7 Gilles Simon on Tuesday.

Soderling and Schuettler have played five times in total, with the Swede holding a slender 3-2 advantage in the head-to-head series. The two last met at the 2008 tournament in Stockholm, Soderling snagging a quarterfinal-round victory in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.

Juan Martin Del Potro vs. Igor Andreev (Blue Group)

World No. 5 Juan Martin Del Potro looks to keep Argentina in contention for top honors in the Blue Group. Del Potro dismissed Italian Andreas Seppi on Tuesday, 6-3, 6-4. Argentina went on to defeat Italy 3-0, recovering from a 1-2 opening-round loss to a talented Serbian squad. Russia has fared poorly so far, dropping a 1-2 tie to Italy and a 0-3 tie to Serbia. Andreev hopes to turn the tide for the struggling Russian team, following lackluster singles performances by Evgeny Korolev and Stanislav Vovk.

Thursday’s matchup marks the fourth career meeting between Del Potro and Andreev.

The Argentine is a perfect 3-0 in the head-to-head series with the Russian, winning their last encounter at the 2008 tournament in Basel. Del Potro came through a competitive clash in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 7-5.
