World No. 9 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga must dig out of a 0-1 deficit Wednesday afternoon in order to keep France afloat in the tie against Germany. Compatriot and world No. 7 Gilles Simon was unsuccessful in his outing with Rainer Schuettler on Tuesday, falling to the German in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Tsonga has split two matches at the WTC this week, rallying from a set down his match with Andreas Vinciguerra of Sweden to notch a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory. The 24-year-old paired with Jeremy Chardy for the doubles decider Monday afternoon, bowing out to the Swedish duo of Robin Soderling and Robert Lindstedt.
Philipp Kohlschreiber hopes to collect another win for Germany, following his comeback victory over Robby Ginepri on Monday. The German rebounded after losing a close tie break to the American, pulling through in straight sets, 6-7, 7-6, 6-0. Kohlschreiber helped bring Germany to 1-1 in the tie with the United States before doubles teammates Nicolas Kiefer and Mischa Zverev cemented the 2-1 triumph.
Tsonga and Kohlschreiber have clashed once; the Frenchman snaged a 5-7, 7-6, 6-3 round of 16 victory at the 2007 tournament in Metz.
