No. 2 seed Jurgen Melzer of Austria advanced to the second round in Kitzbuhel. Mario Ancic was not so fortunate.
Jurgen Melzer def. Frederico Gil 6-3, 6-0
Jurgen Melzer delighted the home crowd with an impressive beatdown of Portugal’s Frederico Gil. Gil has been having a good year in 2009 – his current ranking is a career high 67th in the world, but he was no match for Melzer. The Austrian broke Gil five times in the 54-minute match. Melzer was broken once himself, due in part to his low first service percentage in the opening set (he served at 46%). Otherwise, the pre-Roland Garros performance was solid from Melzer.
Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo def. Mario Ancic 6-4, 6-3
World No. 131 Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain posted a big upset win over the 38th-ranked Mario Ancic. The Croat has never been known for clay-court prowess; he performs at his best on fast courts where his booming serve can assist him. Still, Tuesday’s loss to Ramirez-Hidalgo must be considered a surprise. The Spaniard is largely a clay-courter; he used a combination of defense and the slower surface to keep himself in points. Ancic dropped serve three times in the straight-set match.
