WTC - Del Potro wins, Simon falls to Schuettler World No. 5 Juan Martin Del Potro made a successful start Tuesday afternoon, posting a straight-set victory for Argentina. Veteran Rainer Schuettler notched his 300th win, upsetting world No. 7 Gilles Simon.

Rainer Schuettler def. Gilles Simon 6-4, 6-4 (Red Group)

Veteran Rainer Schuettler gave host nation Germany a 1-0 lead over France on Tuesday, delivering a straight-sets dismissal to Gilles Simon in a little over an hour-and-a-half. The 33-year-old collected his 300th victory on the ATP World Tour since his debut in 1995. Schuettler, ranked 29th, came into the match winless in his last six matches, and a dismal 0-4 against Simon. The German dropped serve just once in the match, securing three of 6 break point opportunities. Schuettler closed the contest strongly, winning 80% of his points on second serve in set two. The veteran improves his record to 6-12 for the 2009 season.

Germany, a 2-1 winner over the United States earlier this week, continues its tie with France on Wednesday.

Juan Martin Del Potro def. Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-4 (Blue Group)

World No. 5 Juan Martin Del Potro turned in a strong showing in his first match of the week, taking out Italian Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-4. The Argentine offered his home country a much-needed boost, following a disappointing 1-2 loss to a formidable Serbian team. The 20-year-old captured four breaks of the Seppi serve in the contest, moving through comfortably after 72 minutes of play. Del Potro continues to compete well on the clay, bolstered by his semifinal-round berth at the Masters Series Madrid last week. The Argentine served well in the second set to close the match, winning seven of 11 points on his first serve, nine of 12 on his second.

Argentina faces Italy in reverse singles and doubles tomorrow afternoon.

Robin Soderling def. Sam Querrey 6-2, 6-2 (Red Group)

Robin Soderling continued his winning ways on Tuesday, scoring an impressive straight-set victory over Sam Querrey, 6-2, 6-2. The Swede extends his record to 3-0 in the head to head series with the American. Soderling secured the round robin tie with the United States 2-0, helped by the efforts of compatriot Andreas Vinciguerra. The 27-year-old Vinciguerra, ranked 657th, bested Robby Ginepri earlier in the day, defeating the American in straights, 7-5, 6-4. Soderling, looking to bring the WTC top prize home to Sweden for the second year in a row, has yet to drop a match this week. The 24-year-old pushed Sweden through to a 2-1 victory over France in the opening round, snagging both his singles and doubles matches.

Sweden has captured the championship title in 1988, 1991, 1995, and 2008.
