ATP World Tour top 10 talents Juan Martin Del Potro and Gilles Simon will take to the court on day three of the World Team Championship in Dusseldorf.
Gilles Simon vs. Rainer Schuettler (Red Group)
World No. 7 Gilles Simon is set for a fifth-career battle with veteran Rainer Schuettler Tuesday afternoon. The Frenchman holds a perfect 4-0 record over the German, winning their last meeting at the 2009 Masters Series Miami, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. The 24-year-old looks for redemption against host nation Germany after dropping his opening round robin match to Sweden’s Robin Soderling, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Simon has struggled to find consistent form since February, reaching his only quarterfinal-round berth in Estoril. The Frenchman turned in a lackluster showing at the Masters Series Madrid last week, bowing out to Ivan Ljubicic in the round of 16. The 33-year-old Schuettler, ranked 29th in the world, fell to American Sam Querrey on Sunday, 6-2, 4-6, 2-6.
Compatriot Philipp Kohlschreiber leveled the tie with the United States after a 6-7(5), 7-6(4), 6-0 win over Robby Ginepri in Monday’s reverse singles. Nicolas Kiefer teamed with Mischa Zverev to best American duo Mardy Fish and Sam Querrey to seal the win for Germany, 2-1.
Juan Martin Del Potro vs. Andreas Seppi (Blue Group)
World No. 5 Juan Martin Del Potro plays his first match at the WTC tomorrow afternoon, taking on Italian Andreas Seppi. The 20-year-old and Argentina hope to rebound, following an unsuccessful 1-2 tie against Serbia. Del Potro continues to perform well on the clay this season, securing a quarterfinal berth at the Masters Series Rome and a semifinal-round spot last week in Madrid. Seppi, ranked 54th in the world, has competed fairly well on the dirt in 2009. The Italian reached the semifinals of the tournament in Belgrade before losing a tough, three-setter to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.
The 25-year-old went down to Evgeny Korolev on Sunday, 4-6, 4-6. Seppi regrouped with doubles partner Simone Bolelli, a winner in reverse singles, to clinch the tie for Italy 2-1 over Russia.
Robin Soderling vs. Sam Querrey (Red Group)
Robin Soderling leads defending champion Sweden at the WTC this week. The world No. 25 scored an impressive, opening-match win over Gilles Simon, rallying from a set down to prevail 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. The 24-year-old joined forces with Robert Lindstedt in doubles to dismiss France Monday afternoon, defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Jeremy Chardy 10-7 in the 'breaker.
Soderling holds a 2-0 advantage in the head-to-head series with the 21-year-old American. The two last met at the 2009 tournament in Brisbane, the Swede snagging a round of 32 victory, 6-3, 6-3.
