  • Hanescu and Massu through, Bellucci goes down

    5/19/09 3:04 AM | Cheryl Murray
Hanescu and Massu through, Bellucci goes down Victor Hanescu and Nicolas Massu got through their first round matches. Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil fell victim to Daniel Koellerer.

Victor Hanescu def. Nicolas Lapentti 6-7(6), 6-3, 7-5

Big serving Romanian Victor Hanescu posted a tight three set win over Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador. The first set was evenly matched. There were no breaks of serve and the tiebreaker was just barely won by Lapentti, despite the serving power of the Romanian. Hanescu picked up the pace on his serve in the second set. He only struck one ace, but Lapentti had no chances to break serve. Hanescu took the set with a double break advantage. The third set was another tight affair. The Romanian only got the decisive break of serve in the twilight of the match.

Slumping Chilean Nicolas Massu gained a place in the second round with a tidy straight set win over the Czech Republic’s Robin Vik player profile" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #000;">Robin Vik. The Czech’s ranking currently sits at 378 in the world; he spends his playing time on the Futures tour and attempting to qualify for Challengers and the rare ATP tour event. He gave more resistance than the scoreline indicates; he earned nine break points (though he only converted one). Massu has struggled himself. He is ranked 122 in the world, which forces him to qualify for most main tour events.

Daniel Koellerer def. Thomaz Bellucci 6-4, 6-4

Austria’s own Daniel Koellerer put up an excellent first round win over Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci on Monday. The Austrian is known more for his unruly on-court behavior than his skill. He is ranked higher than his opponent (81 to Bellucci’s 120), however he was not necessarily the favorite in the match. Bellucci is a up-and-coming star, touted as the next possible great thing from Brazil, but he has struggled to win matches this year. Koellerer will take on the winner of Paul Capdeville and Diego Junqueira in the second round.
