Russia's Mikhail Youzhny kicks off a day of sparse play at the Austrian Open in the last tune-up tournament before the French Open.
Mikhail Youzhny will attempt to get another few matches in before heading to Paris in a week’s time. The Russian’s ranking has plummeted over the last year due to spotty form. The Russian was once ranked No. 8 in the world (last January) on the strength of his hard court form, but his best results in 2009 have come on clay.
Youzhny made the final in Munich several weeks ago and he successfully qualified for the event in Rome, though he lost in the second round to Stanislas Wawrkina.
Daniel Gimeno-Traver has already lost to Youzhny in 2009. The two men met in the first round in Rome; Youzhny beat the Spaniard 7-5, 6-4. Gimeno-Traver is ranked 83 in the world. He gets his best results on clay, but he does not have the consistency nor the weaponry to advance deep in tournaments on a regular basis.
Gimeno-Traver might be able to take a set, but Youzhny should pull out the win in the end.
