Robin Soderling, who led Sweden to the 2008 title at the World Team Championships, defeats Gilles Simon in three sets on Day 1 to pull the Swedes even with France.
Robin Soderling came back from a set down to dominate Gilles Simon 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 on Sunday at the World Team Championships in Dusseldorf, Germany. Soderling needed one hour and 46 minutes to upset the No. 7 player in the world.
It was not easy in the beginning for Soderling, however, as the Swede surrendered serve twice in the opening set as a result of winning just four of 15 second-serve points. Simon's service percentage collapsed throughout the second frame of play and he could never regain the momentum in the third. Soderling completely owned the final set, capitalizing on three of four break points and dropping a mere three points in three service games.
The hero of last year's World Team Championships, Soderling compiled an amazing 6-0 match record en route to Sweden's 2008 championship. He was 3-0 in both singles and doubles, including a title-clinching doubles win against Russia with partner Robert Lindstedt. Soderling's victory over Simon evened Sweden's match against France at 1-1 after Jo-Wilfried Tsonga survived Andreas Vinciguerra in three sets.
In other team matches after Day 1, the United States leads Germany 1-0, Argentina leads Serbia 1-0, and Russia is tied up with Italy 1-1.

What's happening with Simon? I hope he is not going to be another Gasquet. Was it Ricky who said he needs a big win to regain his confidence?
