Philipp Kohlschreiber defeats Robby Ginepri in three sets before the Germans win the doubles point to beat the United States 2-1 on Day 2 of the World Team Championships.
Philipp Kohlschreiber overcame a substantial deficit to defeat Robby Ginepri 6-7(5), 7-6(4), 6-0 at the World Team Championships in Dusseldorf, Germany on Monday. Kohlschreiber needed two hours and 18 minutes to bring Germany even with the United States at 1-1 after Sam Querrey beat Rainer Schuettler one day earlier.
Ginepri, playing in his first match since February due to a hip injury, started off strong; especially on serve. The American had to save four break points on the way to an opening-set tiebreaker, but he served at 74 percent and won 82 percent of his first-serve points. Ginepri failed to capitalize on two break chances, but ended up taking the 'breaker seven points to five.
The world No. 58 went up an early break in the second, seemingly poised to finish off the match in straight sets and give the United States a clinching second point at the expense of the Germans. Kohlschreiber, however, had other ideas. To the delight of the Dusseldorf fans, their man stormed back to force a tiebreaker, which he won seven points to four. From there, Ginepri was nothing more than hopeless. Kohlschreiber lost a mere three points in three service games and seized all three of his break chances to dominate the final set 6-0.
Nicolas Kiefer and Mischa Zverev then came out and also came back from a set down, defeating Sam Querrey and Mardy Fish 4-6, 6-4, 10-1 (super-tiebreaker) to give Germany a 2-1 win over the Americans.
In other results at the WTC on Tuesday, Serbia bounced back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Argentina 2-1. Viktor Troicki prevailed in both singles and doubles. Defending champion Sweden broke a 1-1 tie with France as 2008 WTC hero Robin Soderling teamed up with Robert Lindstedt to dispatch Jeremy Chardy and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Italy edged Russia 2-1 thanks to a doubles victory by experienced duo Simone Bolelli and Andreas Seppi.
