  • Ginepri returns to action on Day 2 of WTC

    5/18/09 6:11 AM | Ricky Dimon
Ginepri returns to action on Day 2 of WTC Robby Ginepri will be playing for the first time since February on Monday at the World Team Championships. He takes on Philipp Kohlschreiber with the United States leading Germany 1-0.

On Monday in Dusseldorf, Germany, oft-injured American Robby Ginepri will be taking the court for the first time since a loss to Andy Roddick at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis three months ago. Ginepri meets Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second singles rubber of an opening round-robin match in the between the United States and Germany in the 2009 World Team Championships.

The United States is in the lead 1-0 after Sam Querrey defeated Rainer Schuettler 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 on Sunday. A Ginepri win would secure the team victory for the Americans in the best two-out-of-three match. A Kohlschreiber win would set up a decisive doubles clash later in the day.

This is the first career encounter between Ginepri and Kohlschreiber. Ginepri is still a respectable 58th in the world despite missing considerable time with a hip injury, while Kohlschreiber currently registers at 31st. The German won two matches last week at the Masters Series Madrid before withdrawing prior to scheduled third-round matchup against Rafael Nadal.

Ginepri is capable of clay-court success, as he showed in the form of a surprise fourth-round appearance at last year's French Open. It's hard to imagine a victory on Monday, however, considering he has been sidelined for three months. If Kohlschreiber is fully recovered, he should take this without too much difficulty.

Maximo Gonzalez and Viktor Troicki will square off in the only other singles match on Monday. Troicki needs to prevail in order to pull Serbia even with Argentina. Four critical doubles matches are also on the Monday schedule.
