David Nalbandian is all but done this tennis season after undergoing hip surgery in Barcelona this week. The 27-year-old finally made the decision after losing in the first round at Estoril as the longstanding problem got worse.
His rehab will keep him out for four months, meaning the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open are off the menu.
"David is in a perfect state of health," said his doctor Angel Ruiz Cotorro. "The operation went as planned."
The world No. 15 will not be able to start rehab until mid-July and is surely out of the game for up to to six months. He is planning to stay in Barcelona for part of his rehabilitation.
But doctors hope that the sportsman could make a quicker recovery than normal and return to tennis sooner than a "civilian" patient.

What a shame. How does this affect his ranking? Ricky, Cheryl could you tell me what the rules are?

He will go down in rankings as he will not play. He will have a protected ranking when he comes back, which will be his current ranking. So lets say he is no.16 now and will be outside top 100 by the time he comes back. He will have the right for several tournaments to enter with his protected ranking which means he will enter the tournaments as if he is no.16 in the rankings but protected ranking will not affect seedings. He will not have to worry about any of these though because he will be able to get WC to any tournament he wishes.
