Mardy Fish and Robin Soderling are victorious at the Masters Series Madrid on Monday afternoon. They are joined in the second round by Simone Bolelli.
Mardy Fish d. Janko Tipsarevic 7-6(3), 6-4
Fish needed one hour and 38 minutes to dispatch Tipsarevic in the first round of the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open on Monday afternoon. The 26th-ranked American went down an early break in the first set, but it was mostly routine for him the rest of the way. Fish got the break back to eventually force a tiebreaker in the opening frame of play, and he dominated it seven points to three. Both players served well in the first set, combining for 11 aces and no double-faults. Only Fish, however, sustained the level in set two. He added five aces to just one double-fault and never got broken. Tipsarevic, who double-faulted twice and put in barely more than half of his first deliveries, surrendered serve once and that was enough for Fish to move into the second round. Next up for Fish is No. 16 seed Tommy Robredo, a three-set winner over Nicolas Kiefer on Sunday.
Robin Soderling d. Ivan Navarro 6-4, 6-2
Soderling was scheduled to play Igor Andreev, but Andreev had retired during a match at last week's Serbia Open with an abdominal strain and he decided he could not go on Monday. Lucky loser Navarro got Andreev's spot against Soderling and never showed any signs of being able to capitalize on the opportunity. Soderling did not serve particularly well, but he saved two break points in the first set and that was enough to allow his lone break to stand up. The 23rd-ranked Swede dropped serve once in set two, but he broke in three of four return games to finish off the proceedings in a brisk one hour and 11 minutes. For the match, Soderling was successful on all four of his break-point chances and won an impressive 13 of 19 second-serve return points. Soderling will meet world No. 2 Roger Federer in round two.
Simone Bolelli d. Juan Ignacio Chela 7-5, 7-6(3)
Bolelli never lost serve in a tough straight-set win over Chela that lasted one hour and 57 minutes. Both players took care of their service games throughout the opening frame of play until the Argentine qualifier served to stay in the set at 5-6. Bolelli got the break--and the set--and seemed to well on his way to victory when Chela took an injury timeout to get his wrist looked at during the 2-1 changeover in set two. It did not turn out to be a major issue, however, and the world No. 197 continued to go toe-to-toe with Bolelli. Just as he was in the first set, however, the 23-year-old Italian was too good in the pressure moments. He saved three break points--while Chela saved one--as the second set progressed to a tiebreaker. Bolelli donated an early mini-break, but he got it right back and went on to cruise through the decider seven points to three. A pair of huge forehands gave him three match points, and he capitalized on his first opportunity when Chela netted a forehand. Next up for Bolelli is a second-round clash against new world No. 3 Andy Murray.
