  • Querrey, Robredo advance in Madrid

    5/10/09 10:28 PM | Ricky Dimon
Querrey, Robredo advance in Madrid Sam Querrey defeats Radek Stepanek in straight sets on Day 1 at the Masters Series Madrid. He is joined in the second round by Tommy Robredo.

    Sam Querrey d. (15) Radek Stepanek 7-6, 5-2, retired

The Mutua Madrilena Masters lost its first seeded player on Sunday evening, as No. 15 Stepanek fell to Querrey in straight sets after one hour and 17 minutes. Stepanek actually called it quites prematurely, retiring down 5-2 in the second set with a left knee injury. While the outcome was not in doubt at that point, it was in serious question throughout the opening frame of play. Neither man could break serve as the first set progressed to a tiebreaker, although both players had chances. Stepanek saved four break points and Querrey survived one. The 6'6'' American helped his chances with six aces in set one, while winning 88 percent of his first-serve points. After having most of the break opportunities in the first set, Querrey dominated the decider seven points to two.

The world No. 61 never looked back in set two, dropping a mere three points in his last three service games. With his opponent fading fast, Querrey earned two breaks, the second of which gave him a 5-2 advantage. That's when Stepanek decided that could not even last one more game. Querrey awaits either Andreas Seppi or Eduardo Schwank in the second round.

    (16) Tommy Robredo d. Nicolas Kiefer 3-6, 6-2, 6-2

Robredo needed three sets and one hour and 58 minutes to defeat Kiefer in the Madrid first round. It was not looking good early for the tournament's No. 16 seed, who won just six points in his first five return games and did not see one break point in the opening frame of play. But with the Spanish crowd behind him and two clay-court titles already under his belt this season, Robredo completely turned the match around in sets two and three. His second break of the second set finished it off in style and forced a decisive third.

A disgruntled Kiefer could not recover, and the German was almost hopeless on serve throughout the final set. He put in just 50 percent of his first serves and won a mere two of 12 second-serve points. Just as he did in set two, Robredo finished off the match with a break; his third of the final set and fifth overall. Next up for Robredo is either Mardy Fish or Janko Tipsarevic.
