Mikhail Youzhny moves into the final of the BMW Open after defeating wildcard Daniel Brands on Saturday. The Russian took out the German in three sets.
Mikhail Youzhny will make his second finals appearance at the BMW Open on Sunday. The World No. 64 survived a tricky opponent in German qualifier Daniel Brands in Saturday’s semi. Youzhny rallied from 3-6 down to prevail in three tough sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Russian books his first spot in an ATP World Tour final since reaching the last Sunday of the 2007 BMW Open.
Hometown hope Brands, who notched his first ATP World Tour wins of the 2009 season this week, secured a critical service break midway through the opening set. Brands turned in a steady performance on serve as well, winning 86% of his first-service points behind a trio of aces.
Youzhny quickly regrouped in the second set, breaking immediately to build a 3-0 lead. The 26-year-old held all five of his service games, never facing a break point. He continued to post solid numbers on his first serve, pocketing 88% of the points to level the match at a set apiece.
A highly contested third would follow, neither player surrendering serve until late in the set. Brands collected four break point opportunities at 4-3, but could not convert any of them. A steadied Youzhny secured a service break in the following game, setting himself up to serve for a place in the finals. The Russian closed the contest in one hour and 57 minutes.
Youzhny will face fourth seed Tomas Berdych in the final on Sunday. Berdych came through his third consecutive three-setter on Saturday, dismissing Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.
