Captain John Fitzgerald is on the brink of ending his Australian Davis Cup coaching career in the wake of the security controversy involving this weekend's aborted Asian zonal tie in Chennai.
The London-based ITF awarded the win to India and now 28-time winner Australia face possible sanctions in 2010 for refusing to travel to what the team considered a danger zone.
And the unfortunate situation has got former player Fitzy considering just packing in his job. "You might expect the decision are made in board rooms, but who knows," he complained to the AAP. "Maybe they're made with BlackBerrys from long distances with language breakdowns...."
The skipper admits he is undecided about his future. Should he depart, he would follow coach Darren Cahill, who stepped down last month.
The captain called the Davis Cup "a great part of my life and I'm still committed to the Davis Cup. But it's only a few weeks since we realized that we're out of the comp for this year and it's a long way till the beginning of next year.
"My future, I hope, involves tennis in ongoing forms. I mean, it was my first love. But I think it's too early for anyone to be thinking about next year yet."
