Fourth seed Tomas Berdych and Mikhail Youzhny move safely through to the final four at the BMW Open on Friday. The Czech and the Russian each posted quarterfinal-round match wins in three tough sets.
(4) Tomas Berdych def. (WC) Lleyton Hewitt 4-6, 6-3, 7-6
Tomas Berdych extended his head-to-head lead to 2-0 over Lleyton Hewitt late Friday, rallying from a set down in their quarterfinal-round match. The Czech turned the match around at 3-2 in the second set, securing his first break of the match. Berdych leveled the match serving at 5-3, capitalizing on a forehand error from Hewitt. The players traded breaks of serve twice in the third set to reach a tiebreak after nearly two hours of play. Berdych jumped out to an early advantage in the 'breaker, stealing both service from the Australian to lead 4-0. Hewitt fought back, capturing four of the next five points to trail Berdych by a single point at 4-5. The Australian faltered on the next point, gifting a lazy forehand error to fall behind two match points. Berdych closed the match on an unreturnable serve, booking his place among the final four in two hours and 18 minutes. The fourth seed will take on Jeremy Chardy of France in the semifinals.
Mikhail Youzhny def. (7) Paul-Henri Mathieu 7-5, 3-6, 6-3
Mikhail Youzhny defeated seventh-seeded Frenchman for the fourth time, posting a hard-fought victory in their quarterfinal match on Friday. The unseeded Russian continues to blaze the comeback trail, reaching his first semifinal berth in 2009. Youzhny, a 2007 finalist at the BMW Open, clocked 10 aces in the two-hour and 18-minute contest. The Russian served well throughout the match, holding 14 of 15 games. Youzhny, never facing a break point in the decider, captured the only break of the third set. Mathieu had trouble on his second serve late in the third, capturing a dismal 33% of his second-service points. Youzhny finished the day winning 79% of his points on first serve, 59% on his second. The 26-year-old advances to his second semifinal at the BMW Open since he debuted at the tournament in 2002. Youzhny will face German wildcard Daniel Brands in the semis. Brands made his way to the last four after Italian Potito Starace was forced to retire.
