  • Tipsarevic sets up showdown with Djokovic

    5/6/09 12:27 AM | Ricky Dimon
Tipsarevic sets up showdown with Djokovic Janko Tipsarevic defeats Sergio Roitman to set up an all-Serb clash in Belgrade with Novak Djokovic. Ivan Ljubicic and Marcos Daniel also advance.

    Janko Tipsarevic d. Sergio Roitman 7-5, 6-2

Tipsarevic gave the Serbian fans what they wanted to see on Tuesday night, dispatching Roitman in one hour and 28 minutes. Clearly feeling the pressure of being the night-session headliner in front of the home crowd, Tipsarevic could not pull away from Roitman early on in the proceedings. Both men came out shaky and two breaks of serve each were exchanged en route to 5-5. A third break of serve for Tipsarevic gave the favorite a 6-5 lead and he promptly closed things out to take a one-set advantage. The world No. 63 never looked back after that and dominated the second frame of play with two more breaks. Tipsarevic was devastating on serve in set two, putting in 74 percent of his first offerings and losing only three points in four service games. Next up for Tipsarevic is a second-round showdown with fellow Serb and No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic. The countrymen have squared off once before, with Djokovic prevailing in three sets last year on the grass courts of Queen's Club.

    Ivan Ljubicic d. Victor Crivoi 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-4

Ljubicic survived a big-serving affair with Crivoi after two hours and 23 minutes. The two players exchanged just one break of serve each as the first set progressed to a tiebreaker. Ljubicic won it easily, seven points to two, but threw away the momentum early in the second by dropping serve. Crivoi saved all five break points he faced during the second frame of play en route to a decisive third. The underdog Romanian had five chances to break in the final set but could not convert, and he finally cracked while serving to stay in the match at 4-5. Ljubicic capitalized on his third break point of the set to finish off the proceedings in style, booking a place in the second round. He finished with an impressive 17 aces, while Crivoi blasted 11 aces and no double-faults. The world No. 53, seeded sixth in Belgrade, will take on Marcos Daniel for a spot in the quarterfinals.

    Marcos Daniel d. Guillermo Canas 3-6, 6-1, 6-4

Daniel bounced back from a first-set defeat to outlast a more accomplished opponent in Canas after two hours and 20 minutes. In the early going it looked like the Argentine's experience would be too much for Daniel. Canas took the first set with a single break of serve and he dropped a mere four points (none when he made his first serve) in five service games. It all changed, however, after that. Daniel put in 80 percent of his first serves in set two and lost just four points in four service games. Two breaks were more than enough for the Brazlian to force a deciding third frame of play. Once again a single break would be all Daniel needed to pull off the victory, as he did not face any break points in the final set. The world No. 120 will be an underdog again in the second round against Ljubicic.
