Argentine David Nalbandian has revealed he's hoping against the medical odds to avoid hip surgery which will keep him out of the French Open and Wimbledon.
The 27-year-old told Argentine television that time is running out for him to make a fitness decision. "I'm in treatment to try to avoid surgery. I've been trying for a year to avoid an operation and that's what I hope to continue to do.
"But I have less and less margin, it seems to get worse. I'm going to train this week and stay with the treatment. If things don't improve towards the weekend, then I have no choice but to undergo an operation."
Should he go under the knife it would be next week in Barcelona with the Spanish federation doctor Angel Ruiz Cotorro in the operating room.
Nalbandian crashed out of the Estoril first round and has given himself through this week of physiotherapy to make a decision.

Orion, that may be so, but Nalby is one of the finest tennis players we have ever seen....its a shame that he may have to go through an operation like this.
I wish him all the best though!

Hewitt just won his 500th atp match after hip surgery so maybe there is hope.

I wish Nalby all the best for his health and future. Such a shame to have to deal with that at such a young age. Carlos Moya just had hip surgery about a month ago and now Nalby. I hope this isn't a new trend of a tennis injury!

Looks like he is going to miss most of this year. It would be a while before he will be able to play top level tennis again. What a shame for such a talented player.
I wish him a speedy recovery.

Hip surgeries are tough to recover from; especially for a 27 year old. I dont think we will see him competing at high level anytime soon :(
