Unseeded Mikhail Youzhny dismissed third seed Nicolas Almagro in the second round of the BMW Open on Wednesday.
Mikhail Youzhny returns to the quarterfinal round of the BMW Open for the fourth time since his debut in 2002. The Russian upset third-seeded Nicolas Almagro 7-6, 6-4 on Wednesday. Youzhny, a former world No. 8 and a BMW Open finalist in 2007, looks to jumpstart a lackluster season.
The players each held all six of their first six service games to push the opening set to a tiebreak. Youzhny took the breaker by the score of seven points to two, taking a one-set advantage. The Russian completed the first set in solid fashion on serve, winning 83% of his first-serve points, 71% of his second.
Youzhny went on to secure two breaks of the Almagro serve, while dropping serve just once in the second set. The Russian captured 19 of 26 points on serve, closing out the match in an hour and 26 minutes.
The 26th-ranked Almagro has yet to notch a quarterfinal round berth in four consecutive clay court tournaments. The Spaniard continues to struggle during the 2009 season, following his successful title defense at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in February.
Youzhny will face Frenchman and seventh seed Paul-Henri Mathieu in the quarterfinals. Mathieu came through his second round match on Wednesday, snagging a victory over German Denis Gremelmayr 6-1, 6-4.
