  • Simon, Fish through to second round

    5/5/09 4:04 AM | Cheryl Murray
Simon, Fish through to second round Gilles Simon and Mardy Fish got past the first round on the opening day in Estoril.

Gilles Simon def. Robert Kendrick 6-3, 7-6(7)

France’s Gilles Simon survived a late charge by American Robert Kendrick to pass safely into the second round. The tournament’s top seed had a difficult time holding serve against the 81 ranked American. The two men traded breaks in the opening set twice with the Frenchman adding another to take the set at last. The second set was not as sloppy as the first. Kendrick managed to save all but one of 6 break point chances against him. Simon also suffered a break of serve to force a competitive tie-breaker. Simon just barely held on for 9-7 in the breaker for the straight set victory. Simon awaits the winner of Fabio Fognini and nostalgic favorite Gaston Gaudio.

Mardy Fish def. Teimuraz Gabashvili 6-3, 6-4

Though known as strictly a hard court player, American Mardy Fish posted a good win over Russia’s Teimuraz Gabashvili. The early part of the match was marked with a string of service breaks. As the Simon match had been, Fish and Teimuraz traded breaks of serve two times before Fish finally took control of the match with a one-break lead in the first set. Gabashvili continued to have trouble holding serve in the second set. The Russian was broken 2 more times and only managed to break back once to give the American a straight set victory into the second round.
