  • Injured Nalbandian desperate to take his place in Paris

    5/5/09 6:53 PM | Johan Lindahl
Injured Nalbandian desperate to take his place in Paris David Nalbandian is desperate to aim for a place at the fast-approaching French Open despite being bothered by a hip injury suffered a fortnight ago in Barcelona.

Nalbandian missed the Rome Masters last week, electing to stay in Barcelona for treatment on the problem. He then was beaten in his comeback at the Estoril Open. With his loss in Portugal, the immediate future for the 27-year-old remains cloudy. But the Argentine said, "I will do my best to try and play in Paris (starting in three weeks)."

At the time he hurt his hip, speculation in South America was growing that surgery might be required. While ruling nothing out, the two-time Roland Garros semifinalist is not looking that far ahead.

Instead, he's more concerned about doing poorly in his comeback try. "My preparation coming to Estoril was as good as possible but limited due to my ongoing injury," he said. "I did everything I could to recover on time to play this tournament.

"I believe I arrived in the best shape possible given the circumstances. The injury still bothers me. I have to keep working on getting better."

I don't think he can be a factor at all in Paris unfortunately...I hope he heals though, because it's always nice to watch him gun for the big guns...

Nalbandian is an amazing player. I really hope he is able to recover soon. He is able to challenge every single player on the tour. I cannot believe he hasn't yet won a slam. So talented. He needs laser therapy on that hip....Lots of the footballers who have had similar injuries have recovered in a heartbeat. Its possible, where there is a will there is a way.

Too bad for Nalbandian, but he wouldn't be a factor at all at Roland Garros even if 100 percent healthy. It's time for Nalbandian to start getting ready for the indoor season. That appears to be his only real hope at this point in his career.

Ricky you are such a pessimist! Nalby is gonna be around for the long haul. He got too much to give to the sport. He is an animal on a good day and still has the capacity to win a slam. No question.
