Tournament seeds Tomas Berdych and Paul-Henri Mathieu are through to the second round of the BMW Open. Lleyton Hewitt won his 500th ATP World Tour match in dramatic fashion on Tuesday.
Tomas Berdych (4) def. Sascha Kloer (Q) 7-6, 6-4
Fourth seed Tomas Berdych shook off two early break points during his opening-round match with German qualifier Sascha Kloer late Tuesday. The Czech began the match slowly, failing to convert five of 5 break point chances in the first set. Berdych strung a handful of points together in the opening-set tiebreak, winning by the score of 7 points to zero. A steadied 23-year-old quickly built a two-break, 5-2 lead in the second set. Berdych was broken while serving for the match at 5-2, but broke in the following game to close the 91-minute match. The fourth seed completed the day converting just two of 10 break point opportunities. He faces German wildcard Andreas Beck in the second round.
Paul-Henri Mathieu (7) def. Lamine Ouahab (LL) 6-3, 6-2
Seventh seed Paul-Henri Mathieu needed just 68 minutes to defeat Algerian lucky loser Lamine Ouahab in the first round on Monday. The Frenchman converted three of 7 break point chances, never facing a break point. The 27-year-old looked solid on serve throughout the match, winning 27 of 30 first-service points. A shaky Ouahab failed to establish himself in the contest, gifting five double faults and capturing less than 50% of his points on second serve. Mathieu will battle German Denis Gremelmayr in round two. The German came through his opening-round match after Argentine Martin Vassallo Arguello was forced to retire.
Lleyton Hewitt (WC) def. Philipp Petzschner 6-2, 6-7, 7-6
Former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt survived a marathon opening-round match up with German Philipp Petzschner on Tuesday. The veteran Australian needed seven match points to close the two-hour and 38-minute contest, notching win No. 500. Hewitt looked to have the match under control until a controversial call on match point at 5-4 turned the tide for Petzschner. The German went on to rally from a set down, leveling the match in a second-set tiebreak. Hewitt squandered a 4-2 break lead and three additional match points at 4-5 on the Petzschner serve. The German pushed the match to a third-set tiebreak, jumping out to a 5-2 advantage. The Australian battled back, winning three consecutive points to reach 5-5. Petzschner collected match points at 6-5 and 7-6, but failed to convert. Hewitt, missing match point No. 6 on a wild forehand error, snagged No. 7 to secure the tie break. He meets qualifier Thiemo De Bakker of the Netherlands in the next round. The 20-year-old De Bakker knocked out fifth seed Rainer Schuettler Tuesday afternoon.
