Early week rain can't spoil the new Serbia Open for top seed Novak Djokovic as his family's management skills are tested by the weather during the tournament debut.
"It's very important, obviously," said last weekend's Rome runner-up to Rafael Nadal. "As a host of the tournament as well, I feel really happy for my family, for myself, and for all the players from Serbia."
The Djokovic-funded and managed event is the first for the ATP in the newest power nation in the game. Officials are already learning the art of playing catch-up after a day's worth of main-draw play was rained out.
First on the supply shopping list might be court covers for a newly revitalized tennis complex in the capital of Belgrade. And it is unlikely though that groundsmen will resort to the trick tried a decade ago in Rome, when workers merely lit bonfires to burn off standing water at the Foro Italico.
Djokovic, who begins mid-week after a bye, has pride on the line at home. "Everybody is excited to have an event for the first time in our country," he explained. "I look forward to it. I have a bye, so I have a little more time to recover and get ready. I will try to do my best."
