  • Rain on the Djokovic parade

    5/4/09 10:09 PM | Ricky Dimon
Rain on the Djokovic parade Rain marred the first day of main-draw action in the history of the Serbia Open, where Novak Djokovic is the top seed and uncle Goran Djokovic is the director. Not a single main-draw match was completed.

Rain halted play on the first day of the inaugural Serbia Open before a single match could be completed. Christophe Rochus and Nicolas Devilder were tied up at 5-5 in the third set when the action was stopped on Monday afternoon. Rochus had a chance to finish it off well before the skies opened up, but after winning the opening set, the 5'7'' Belgian dropped the second in a tiebreaker.

Three final-round qualifying matches, however, were finished before the rains came. The top three seeds--Victor Crivoi, Santiago Ventura, and Flavio Cipolla--all advanced. Dominik Hrbaty and Lukasz Kubot had not yet started their clash for qualification in the main draw. The winner will have to play two matches on Tuesday.

Also postponed were Sam Querrey and Serbia's own Viktor Troicki. Scheduled to be the marquee match of Monday's night session, Querrey-Troicki is now on the menu for Tuesday afternoon.

Those two up-and-coming players are now part of a jam-packed Day 2. The continuation of Rochus and Devilder will kick off the day's action on Center Court. Serb Janko Tipsarevic will be featured during the night session against Argentine Sergio Roitman.

Notable matches on Court 1 include Steve Darcis vs. Arnaud Clement and Marcos Baghdatis vs. a qualifier. The qualifiers cannot yet be put in the main draw since the result of one qualifying match (Hrbaty vs. Kubot) remains unknown.
