Lleyton Hewitt fears that his Davis Cup career could be done courtesy of a looming ban on Australia for skipping a zonal Asia tie over worries about the security in India.
Should the Aussies be kept out of the competition in 2010 by the Internatioanl Tennis Federation, it could be curtains for Hewitt, 28 and nearing the end of his run in the game. Hewitt told his website he felt "very let down by the ITF", and he knows the hammer will surely drop.
"That decision could have severe ramifications for me as a player, and could effectively end my Davis Cup career. While I have been a winning team member twice, I would be devastated if this was the way for my career playing for my country ended".
"As far as I'm concerned, I still have unfinished business in Davis Cup, including getting Australia back into the World Group".
Hewitt blasted the scheduling of the zonal tie, which was placed straight in the middle of the buildup on clay for Roland Garros. "I had made the commitment to forgo my French Open preparations to play in India even though I am trying to re-establish myself in the world rankings following injury".

I hope they don't do that to Hewitt. I've never really followed his career but he seems like a nice guy and many really like him so he is good for tennis.

Hewitt's support of Davis Cup and service for the Australian team are probably unmatched amongst current players. Even when he was world #1 it was his top priority. It will be a travesty if the pig-headedness of the ITF means that their idiotic decision causes the end of his Davis Cup career.

That is so true sukhumvit. I can't believe they are considering banning Australia in 2010 and it's likely to go ahead apparently. Hewitt and Australia don't deserve it. I think their safety concerns were valid and it sounds ot me like ITF are just pulling ranks so to speak.
