Frenchman Jeremy Chardy secured a spot in the second round of the BMW Open on Monday. Ernests Gulbis crashed out to Nicolas Kiefer in three sets.

Jeremy Chardy needed just 57 minutes to notch an opening-round victory over Russian Evgeny Korolev Monday afternoon. The World No. 40 turned in a solid performance on serve, striking half-a-dozen aces in nine of 9 service games held. The Frenchman, who faced no break points during the match, went on to secure a break of the Korolev serve at 3-2 in the first set, and 3-3 in set two. The 22-year-old finished the day winning 85% of his first-service points, 81% of his second. Chardy, playing in his BMW Open debut this week, converted three of 8 break point chances during the match. He moves on to face Nicolas Kiefer in the second round.

Veteran German Nicolas Kiefer rallied from a 2-6, 1-3 deficit in his first-round match to defeat Ernests Gulbis on Monday. The Latvian looked to have the match in hand, breaking the Kiefer serve twice in the opening set. Gulbis, never facing a break point in set one, captured 17 of 23 points on serve to lead 6-2. The 20-year-old gave up a break advantage in the second, surrendering serve twice in the set. A steadied Kiefer earned two break points early in the third set, jumping to a 3-2 lead. Gulbis failed to regroup, missing four break point opportunities on the Kiefer serve in set three. The Latvian struggled on serve throughout the third set, winning just two of 9 second-service points. The German pocketed an insurance break at 4-2, closing out the match in an hour and 32 minutes. Kiefer will face Jeremy Chardy in round two.
