Nicolas Almagro moved onto the second round in Munich Sunday afternoon, defeating Jan Hernych in straight sets.
Third-seeded Almagro, returning to the BMW Open for the first time since his 2005 debut, started his 2009 campaign in solid fashion, taking out unseeded Jan Hernych of the Czech Repubplic 6-3, 6-4.
The Spaniard earned two break points at 2-2 on the Hernych serve, quickly building a 4-2 lead in the first set. Almagro turned in a stellar performance on serve in the opening set, saving the only break point against him at 4-3. A steady Spaniard collected two set points receiving at 5-3, closing out the first set in 30 minutes. Almagro completed the opening set winning 81% of his first-serve points, 71% of his second.
Hernych regrouped at the start of the second set, securing an immediate break of the Almagro serve, his first of the match. Almagro broke back in the following game to reach 1-1, converting his third break-point opportunity of the game. The two players held serve comfortably until 4-5 on the Hernych serve, Almagro cashing in his first chance on match point.
The 23-year-old Spaniard finished the match in one hour and 14 minutes, converting four of nine break-point chances. He faces the winner of the first-round encounter between Russian Mikhail Youzhny and Ivo Minar of the Czech Republic.
Almagro becomes the second-highest seeded player in the draw, following top seed Fernando Gonzalez’s Sunday afternoon withdrawal due to injury.
