  • Paris finalist Coria gives up the game

    4/29/09 5:16 PM | Johan Lindahl
Paris finalist Coria gives up the game The Argentine pair who dominated the French Open five years ago are fading fast in tennis, with finalist Guillermo Coria hanging up his racket at age 27 due to burnout and a lack of results.

By contrast the winner that year, Gaston Gaudio, is just clinging on in the sport, rejoicing in winning a round a week ago in Barcelona as he tries to regain some kind of form.

Coria once stood third in the world, but the South American whose ranking is well outside the Top 400, says he's done. "I didn't have any more desire to compete," he told local radio in Buenos Aires. "I've (been) thinking about it for several months".

"In Thailand (where he lost in a Challenger in March) I realized that it was a struggle for me to travel".

Coria won nine titles but now stands at 672nd in the world. "In 2005, I didn't feel like competing. In the last three years, things have not worked out the way I wanted and I haven't had so much passion for what I do. In this sport, you always have to be 100 percent."

Thats a real shame. Maybe he will change his mind once again like his archrival? No harm in hoping!

Yeah. Really sad. I only ever saw one match by Coria, which was the final against Nadal when Nadal was 18 or 19...(they showed it on replay with all the rain in Monte Carlo and Rome). It was one of the BEST matches I have ever seen. Coria's tennis was awesome. Just goes to show how much it takes to not only being a TOP PLAYER but how much incredible dedication, determination and most of all, motivation it takes to keep on doing it day in and day out. To keep having that fighting spirit to enjoy playing the game is pretty awesome. Coria will always be remembered am sure for that amazing match.

this pretty much closes the book on the 2004 French Open final

Coria was never the same person or player ever again

I like Coria; with his talent, Coria should be competitive on the tour at least more 3-4 years. Since 2005, he has been fading too fast
