Tournament seeds Fernando Gonzalez and Marin Cilic booked spots in the third round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on Wednesday. Nikolay Davydenko crashed out to Jurgen Melzer in straight sets.
Fernando Gonzalez (12) def. Janko Tipsarevic 6-4, 6-4
Twelfth seed Fernando Gonzalez held all 10 of his service games in his second-round match early Wednesday, knocking out Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia. The Chilean took the lead midway through the first set, securing a break of serve at 4-4. Gonzalez missed his first two set point opportunities, but connected on the third to close 6-4. The world No. 13 upped his level of play in the second set, capturing a second break of the Tipsarevic serve. Gonzalez held comfortably for the remainder of the match, never facing a break point. The 28-year-old finished the day winning 92% of his first-serve points. He faces Jurgen Melzer of Austria in the third round.
Marin Cilic (15) def. Christophe Rochus 6-0, 5-7, 6-2
Fifteenth seed Marin Cilic survived a second-set hiccup in his match up with Belgian Christophe Rochus on Wednesday. The Croat built an impressive lead at the start, snagging three breaks of serve in the opening set. Cilic lost a bit of concentration in the second set, his second-service percentage falling to a lackluster 33%. Rochus broke serve twice in the set, leveling the match at one set apiece. The World No. 15 regained his composure early in the third set, pocketing service breaks No. 5 and No. 6 behind some aggressive play from the baseline. Cilic cleaned up his performance on serve, allowing no break point chances in set three. The 20-year-old completed the contest with 11 aces, converting six of 11 break-point opportunities. He will meet Argentine Juan Monaco in the next round.
Jurgen Melzer def. Nikolay Davydenko (7) 7-5, 7-6
Seventh seed Nikolay Davydenko continued his run of sub-par results this week, falling to unseeded Austrian Jurgen Melzer in the second round. The Russian never led in the match, dropping serve twice in the opening set. Davydenko failed to execute on his second serve, winning just eight of 20 points. Melzer turned in a good performance on serve, holding 11 of 12 games. The Austrian did not face a break point in the tie-break second set, raising his first service percentage to 82%.
