  • Nadal says clay calendars is slowly reducing

    4/28/09 5:26 PM | Johan Lindahl
Nadal says clay calendars is slowly reducing Rafael Nadal claims that clay events are being reduced over time as the tennis centre of gravity shifts to hardcourts.

"Most of the tournaments of the world are hard or indoor. The clay players can play very well in the rest of the surfaces, and the hard court players can play very well on clay because the surface (clay) is different, but not like before".

"It's not really, really fast the hard, and the clay is not really slow".

"Every year for last years we have less tournaments on clay", said the top seed who lifted a fifth straight title at the weekend in Barcelona.

Nadal is aiming to continue his April miracle run which has brought him his fifth straight titles in Monte Carlo and Barcelona. He is aiming for four of the last five in Rome, where rain interrupted the opening days of play.

The Spanish world No. 1 said that despite his near-total spring domination on clay, he goes into every match knowing he could lose just as easily as win. "Every opponent is dangerous every day, who has not lost on clay since going out at the Foro Italico against Juan Carlos Ferrero in his opening match (second round) 25 matches ago".

"It's tough is win every match. When I go on court, I have a lot of respect for every player. I always think I can lose and I can win. I have to accept both things", said the top seed who lifted three straight trophys 2005-2007.

Nadal holds four title this season and an impressive 33-3 match record. Since 2005, he has compiled a 142-4 mark on the dirt and stands 24-1 lifetime in clay finals".

Ok, he complains about the clay season being reduced.... but what about all the hardcourts and grasscourts being slowed down in a terrific way ???

I don't remember him talking about how much benefit he is taking from that...

Rafael Nadal claims that clay events are being reduced over time as the tennis centre of gravity shifts to hardcourts.

He obviously isnt talking about the court speed, its number of events

hard courts are easier to maintain as compared to clay or grass.Natural surfaces are always harder to maintain. Also the no of players doing well on HC is more than that on clay and grass.

He was not even complaining, he was just stating his observations.

danny , 4/28/09 7:22 PM

It's not surprising that he would be asked about that during the clay season. People have said clay is only good for Europeans (who grow up playing on it), hardcourt is hard on the body, and grass is hard to maintain. There are complaints about every surface out there. There was a great article recently (I cannot remember where I saw it) that said basically, learning clay court helps to make you a better player also on hardcourts and grass, in other words to be an all-around player. I don't know if that is true or not.

^ exception-Rod Laver and Jim Courier..who were both very good on clay and not Europeans..there are other examples too, just listed a couple.

"Need glasses 55?"

No, thanks. He just said "It's not really, really fast". And the truth is most hardcourt tournaments are extremely slow right now. Not to mention Wimbledon, which sometimes it feels like you're watching a green french open.

I like Nadal and I think he deserves to be up there right now but i think he should be really pleased about this thing instead of speaking/complaining about the clay season.

Do i need to mention that i really miss the old times where there was actually players with serve and volley style ?

Emiliano55 , 4/28/09 9:27 PM

Leave Nadal alone!!! So what if he complains or comments or whatever!!! I hAVE HEARD OTHER PLAYERS WHO ARE NOT THAT GOOD ON CLAY COMPLAIN ABOUT HOW SLOW IT IS.......SO WHAT!!!!

Before everyone said how Nadal could only win on clay......but now that his is a much respected all-rounder......it seems that everythig he says now is irritating!!!

LEAVE HIM ALONE!!!!! He's the best....its his party and he can complain if he wants to!!!!!

Rafa is #1 for a number of reasons--not just because of his clay court prowess. That being said, I miss serve & volley too. It may be gone forever :(
How would Sampras have done at Wimby with the current grass? Opinions?

Rafterfan , 4/28/09 10:49 PM

Thats so hard to tell because there are no good serve & volleyers to compare him. He would definitely be up there with roger & rafa, close call after that. I think he still would be the best at wimby though, he was good at making adjustments.

orion , 4/28/09 11:14 PM

Sampras was the tennis gem, he would have found his way at Wimby.

hmmm...i actually would be more fond off having more clay court events . that would mean most players would clock more time on this surface and then we would have wayy more competition on this surface . right now only the guys from spain seem to be super fond off clay as it comes second nature to them . granted the rest of the players are not all that bad on the surface but it takes some getting used to .

on the other hand hardcourt games are soo exciting ..so many more winners ... you get people acctually going for the win rather than sitting back and waiting for the unforced error .

with regards to the post above .... its perfectly fine for him to want more clay events ..i mean he is good on the surface ..hence he would want more tournaments on it ...he expressed his opinion for once instead of sounding like a fake broken tape recorder. ...i think its good ..

fedexfan , 4/29/09 2:23 AM

i dont care abt the number of clay and hardcourt events...........i just want more lawn tennis.......i want more grass court tournaments....tennis was traditionally played on grass nd i love wimby more than ny other slam......queens,halle and wimby r the only good grass court tournaments we have now.......its pathetic,y dont we have more tournaments on grass.......atleast one masters event????/ i know its costly nd hard to maintain but 1 masters event on grass wont harm nyone that much.......or atleast elevate queens to masters level.....
