Feliciano Lopez and Janko Tipsarevic made their way into the second round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on Tuesday. Tomas Berdych fell to qualifier Mischa Zverev in three sets.
Mischa Zverev (Q) def. Tomas Berdych 4-6, 6-2, 7-5
German qualifier Mischa Zverev rallied from a set down in his opening-round match on Tuesday, upsetting World No. 24 Tomas Berdych. Berdych dropped his level of play after winning the first set, failing to capitalize on a break point opportunity early in set two. The German went on to secure two breaks of serve, squaring the match at a set apiece. Zverev jumped out to a 3-0 in the third set, saving three break point chances in his second service game. The Czech closed the gap midway through set three, securing two breaks of serve to lead 5-4. The German clawed his way to 5-5, saving a match point on an errant forehand from Berdych. Zverev pocketed the next two games, closing out the three-hour and 50-minute marathon, 7-5. The 21-year-old takes on the winner of the first-round match between Italian wildcards Fabio Fognini and Filippo Volandri.
Feliciano Lopez def. Thomaz Bellucci (Q) 6-4, 6-2
Spaniard Feliciano Lopez breezed into the second round in Rome, dispatching Brazilian qualifier Thomaz Bellucci in straight sets. Bellucci, unable to control his unforced errors from the forehand wing, could not hold onto a 3-1 lead in the first set. Lopez regrouped in the middle of the set, capturing a break of the Bellucci serve at 3-4. A steady Spaniard closed the set at 6-4, connecting on his third set point opportunity. A listless Bellucci offered no resistance in the second set, quickly falling behind two breaks of serve. Lopez served for the match at 5-2, never facing a break point in set two. The Spaniard finished the day with five aces, winning 25 of 35 first-service points. The 27-year-old meets either Radek Stepanek or Florent Serra in the next round.
Janko Tipsarevic def. Jose Acasuso 6-3, 6-4
Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia moved safely into the second round, defeating Argentine Jose Acasuso on Tuesday. The Serb held nine of 10 service games, clocking 8 aces during the 90-minute encounter. Tipsarevic survived an early hiccup at 1-1 on serve in the first set, saving three of 3 break points. The 24-year-old displayed his usual solid form from the baseline, notching a break of serve to lead 5-3. Tipsarevic hit ace No. 5 on set point, closing out the set, 6-3. Acasuso rebounded at the start of the second set, grabbing a 2-0 lead. The Argentine hit a costly double fault in the following game, surrendering serve at 2-1. Tipsarevic, breaking serve to lead 4-3, did not face a break point for the remainder of the match. The Serb completed the contest winning 80% of his first serves and 62% of his second. Tipsarevic will play the winner of the first-round match between Fernando Gonzalez and Jeremy Chardy.
