Rafael Nadal recently made it five titles in-a-row at two straight tournaments, first in Monte-Carlo and then in Barcelona. This week he will be seeking "only" his fourth Rome winner's trophy, as he was derailed last year by Juan Carlos Ferrero.
The King of Clay has a throne to recapture this week in Rome.
Rafael Nadal, who won the Masters Series Rome in 2005, 2006, and 2007, dropped his 2008 opener to Juan Carlos Ferrero. If it weren't for severe foot blisters that affected him in the upset loss to Ferrero, Nadal might be looking to win back-to-back-to-back tournaments each for a fifth straight time. The world No. 1 won his fifth consecutive Masters Series shield in Monte-Carlo earlier this month and on Sunday earned his fifth Barcelona crown in-a-row with a victory over David Ferrer.
While the Rome draw is interesting to look at, it--like that of any clay-court tournament in which Nadal participates--is completely irrelevant to Nadal's status as the overwhelming favorite. And that's exactly what Nadal is once again in Rome, even though his road to the title could be relatively difficult as the tournament progresses into its latter stages.
Early on, however, it should be entirely smooth sailing for the world No. 1. After an opening-round bye, which all of the top eight seeds receiver, Nadal will face either Andreas Seppi or Sam Querrey. Seppi is a consistent player and Querrey took a set off Nadal on clay last season in Davis Cup action, but neither can seriously test Nadal on the slow stuff. In round three Nadal will mostly like go up against either Robin Soderling or 14th-seeded James Blake. Both Soderling and Blake are tough outs of fast hard courts, but neither man--especially Blake--is accomplished on dirt.
The quarterfinals is where Nadal might really have to get serious. No. 6 seed Fernando Verdasco, who took Nadal to five sets in a classic Australian Open semifinal back in Juanuary, looms large as a potential opponent. Verdasco has reached at least the quarterfinals in all six of his appearances this season, but he has not made it past that stage in any of his last four outings, including his only two clay-court tournaments of 2009. Last week in Barcelona he fell to Fernando Gonzalez in a three-set quarterfinal clash.
Verdasco would do well just to make it seven straight quarterfinal finishes. The Spaniard could face formidable clay-courter Igor Andreev in his opener and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is a potential third-round foe for Verdasco. Tsonga pulled out of Barcelona last week and has never been a real force on clay, but his talent along makes him dangerous on any surface at any time.
If both Nadal and Andy Murray survive their respective quarters, they will square off in the Rome semifinals. Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, meanwhile, are in the other half of the 56-player field.

I have strong feeling that murray is gonna oust Rafa in three. Taht will be a 3.5 hours of fight, and Rafa will lose where he was the strongest before: endurance. That kid will buffer every Rafa's bomb forehand! And once Rafa got enough, Murr is gonna send the ball in Rafa's backhand corner.
Universon , 4/27/09 8:38 AM
yeah, Ricky, you stopped it at the semifinals??! Exactly where it was most important Your comment has another half of it to be finished. Are you expecting of us to finish it by commenting?
Ok, here: Murray is gonna oust Rafa in semi (read my post above)...then Djoker will wipe the floor off by Rog. Then in final...mmm...three tiebreakers! WHO CAN PREDICT THE OUTCOME?
Universon , 4/27/09 8:45 AM
predict it urself, that is ur specialty. a tennis prophet, pathetic
mcfound , 4/27/09 9:40 AM
LMFAO @ mcfound.
look look he is actually imagining it unaware his saliva is leaking haha !
Raindrops , 4/27/09 10:00 AM
i think we may see another Nadal Djokovic final. Although I 'd like to see Roger be a bit more competitive. I don't think Murray has a chance with Rafa now that the clay king is on a roll.
smr , 4/27/09 3:07 PM
universon - I am covering Nadal's quarter of the draw this week. This is a preview for it, not the entire tournament. Read my blog if you want the entire tournament.
RickyDimon , 4/27/09 3:43 PM
No probs... I can give you a prediction for this tournament. Rafa, as his form keeps improving toward peaking at RR, will have no problem dispatching Murray in straight sets, and Nole in the final, also in straight sets. Rafa will not drop a set in this tournament and his service will only get broken 4 times: Once by Murray and twice by Nole. No one will force Rafa to a tiebreak on this one.
Because of last year's blisters, Rafa will go all out in this tournament, and will crush anybody who stands on the other side of his net. Sorry for all the other guys, but that's the way Rome is going to fall this year... o yeah, and brace yourselves for all the puns about the Rafa conquering the Roman Empire and blah, blah... They will abound.
grafight , 4/27/09 5:54 PM
and the other break of serve, I'll leave it open... may be Verdasco.
grafight , 4/27/09 5:58 PM
Ferrero was excellent. There were others who still would have lost.
I wouldn't be surprised if Federer's game finally started to back his ranking but I definately believe Nadal will be the victor unless Federer is kissed by the tennis Gods. I could see Nole pulling this off, maybe, but I tend to think he will have some big head inflation this week and maybe even go out against Roger.
Recordbreaks , 4/28/09 1:28 AM
grafight---if rafa serves like he did in monte carlo, then im afraid there wud be more breaks of his serve.......but i feel its improving,he served better at barcelona....lets hope he finds his serve back for rome nd plays his best.....nd prove some people wrong AGAIN!!!!!!!!!LOLZZ
vrael , 4/28/09 8:23 AM
vrael, one thing for sure, he is determined to win this tourney, a chance for him to add 1 more Master Series to his collection of 14. Those past clay matches he belted at MC & Barca were actual competitive practice while the rest of the top 4 are just having a typical on-court-practice.
Raindrops , 4/28/09 12:00 PM
raindrops-i dunno abt monte carlo, but barcelona was surely constructive for rafa.....he wud have worked that hard nyway preparing for rome masters,if he hadnt played barcelona i think.........so it was nice practice for him,he had to play only one competetive match wid ferrer,nd by beating him he made some more history and added more experience on clay this year.......his fans(incuding me!!) here were worried abt him....abt his fitness...nd abt his busy schedule...but now that he won barcelona so comfortably...im sure it was an intelligent decision....hez one step ahead ALWAYS!!!! lol........nd the most positive thing that made my day today was rafa's interview at rome(check out his site)......after being asked how he felt physically....he replied that he felt PERFECT!!!! now seeing him confident abt his body...im really optimistic abt him winning rome this year!!!!!!
VAMOS RAFA!!!
vrael , 4/28/09 1:29 PM
lolz vreal, before the rafans are making a lot of noise about his decision to play Barca. I sensed then that Rafa wants more matches as much as he can prior to FO. Losing either Rome or Madrid (crossing my fingers, not) will not deminish his chances at RG because he got enough competitive matches then ... but HELL who'll refuse to celebrate if he sweeps them all including RG then streetch his great run all the way down to Queens and Wimbledon. Let's worry later on how he's going to adjust for the upcoming hardcourt tournies leading to USO. Lolzzzzz
VAMOS RAFA
Raindrops , 4/28/09 2:31 PM
yeah raindrops winning uso will surely assert rafa's dominance on men's tennis...completing a career grand slam at 22-23 yrs of age wud be legendary......but it wud be tough though, loads of contenders for uso for me....nd murray leads them
vrael , 4/28/09 2:38 PM
vrael,
Have you walked around to other articles...lolz too much fumes wherever you go. Don't tell them I am here taking a cover because I get involved too at one heated argument and I guess someone is already crying by this time haha
Hope TT can survive the contant rampage of posters lolz.
let me just have one big shout before I go ... VAMOS RAFA !
Raindrops , 4/28/09 4:13 PM
Raindrops,
I'm here seeking cover too. Just doubly happy though that a high school graduate like me can make a phd wannabe cry.lolz
Sorry people, that's my last post on the matter. Now let's get back to rafa.
danny , 4/28/09 4:57 PM
lolz danny hi-5 bro!
Raindrops , 4/28/09 6:09 PM
Hilarious danny, you deserve a pat on the back and an honorary phd!!! :)
But you're right - back to Rafa.
remi , 4/28/09 6:17 PM
honestly, i still have jitters when rafa plays either andy or nole. this no matter how i know and believe that rafa is the greatest clay court player now and ever.
that 2nd set in mc made me drink my beer bottoms up.do you guys feel the same way too.
danny , 4/28/09 7:12 PM
I think that's because we start thinking like Rafa and know not to underestimate any opponent. You never know if he is going to have an "off" day too. You'd think we'd be used to the tension by now--lol.
fan4tennis , 4/28/09 9:02 PM
AS a Rafa fan.....I do worry that he may be playing too many titles...but I must say that Rafa knows what he is doing........barring his struggle with English he is very intelligent and astute....so i trust that he knows what he is doing.
And the thing I REALLY like about Rafa, he works hard and his mindset is that.....he will do anything (within reason, of course!!!) to win a match but if he loses he is disappointed......but he does not let it get under his skin too much....its like....well better luck next time.....and thats excatly what happens......with Wimby, with AO and it will be the same with USOpen!!!
Just wait and see!!!!.....and if Rafa loses RGarros......he WILL win the USOpen!!!.....thats how he operates!!!!....he never allows himself to lose belief!!!!.....I wish we........his fans.......were a little more like him!!!!...it would be nice!
MonaLisa , 4/28/09 10:03 PM
well said monalisa.........love reading ur posts

@ fan4tennis , 4/28/09 9:02 PM
Can I resign now as Rafan? I endure a lot of tensions in the past and more to come I know not good for health. I am contemplating to switch to Stanfan ... the electric ventilator with stand = STANdFAN?
Danny not only some boozes but cigarettes too, not to mention that poor couch which normally absorbs the constant punching and thumping feet in every Rafa's match ... lolz
Raindrops , 4/29/09 9:40 AM
Raindrops,
Are you serious? Please don't leave us to the mercy of you know who.:)
danny , 4/29/09 11:19 AM
danny, of course I am just kidding.
The one-you-know-who is gone acting wild upon hearing your medical advise or 'prescription' of visiting a psychiatrist. It's all your fault now that one-you-know-who sounds so disperate and might have a meltdown any moment:-].
The other one-you-know-who is yet caught of my eyesight, no signs of him at all.

Attention Universon:
You see, you see, YOU SEE??? you trusted so much with what your cracked crystal ball tells you, when was the last time you scrab it clean? lolz. Look again at your ANCIENT crystal ball...WHO'LL BE THE NEXT MAN YOU'LL PUT TO SHUTDOWN RAFA?

Murray is out! So much for your prediction ousting RAFA in 3 sets! As you said, "who can predict the outcome." Apparently YOU CAN'T....
jayhu , 4/29/09 4:07 PM
it wud be so much better UNIVERSON if u let a player's raquet do the talking, rather than predicting things which fall flat on their face.......im waiting to hear wat u have got to say........i hope its logical

I will really like to watch that match (Nadal and Murray) once again, maybe this time it can be a better chance for Murray to actually do something.
Is a shame that i cannot trust in Roger anymore to be in the finals or even semis or quarters...
