Juan Monaco def. Nicolas Kiefer 6-2, 6-3

Juan Monaco needed just 73 minutes to dismiss veteran German Nicolas Kiefer in his opening-round match Monday afternoon. The Argentine secured five of 9 break point opportunities, surrendering serve only once. The 25-year-old won a critical 21 of 32 second-serve return points, keeping the German under pressure throughout the contest. Monaco has reached the round of 32 in Rome three times in four attempts. He faces world No. 4 Andy Murray in the second round.

Christophe Rochus def. Juan Ignacio Chela 6-1, 6-2

Christophe Rochus dropped just three games in an hour, crushing Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina in round one on Monday. The Belgian, continuing the solid form he displayed in Barcelona a week ago, never trailed in the match. Rochus converted five of 11 break-point opportunities, holding seven of eight service games. Chela, hampered by injury, offered little resistance, winning a meager seven of 26 points on his second serve. Rochus will take on the world No. 15 Marin Cilic in round two.

Ivo Karlovic def. Jan Hernych 4-6, 6-4, 6-2

Ivo Karlovic rallied from a set down in his first-round match, defeating Czech qualifier Jan Hernych on Monday. The Croat struck 16 aces, digging himself out of trouble trailing 2-0 in the third set. Karlovic battled for nearly two hours to secure four of seven break-point chances, three of them coming in the deciding set. The 30-year-old turned in a solid day on serve, winning 81% of his first serves and 54% of his second. He reaches the round of 32 in Rome for the third time in three attempts. Karlovic will battle world No. 2 Roger Federer in the next round.
