Novak Djokovic has given the clay at his family's upcoming Serbia Open a final test before heading to Rome as defending champion.
And the world No. 3 is hoping that the countdown to next Monday's start in Belgrade continues to go smoothly.
The national tennis hero spent a few days at home last week after losing the Monte Carlo final to Rafael Nadal, checking out final arrangements for the new ATP event.
While the hometown Serb is the only Top 10 player in the Belgrade field after Spain's Fernando Verdasco opted for the competing Estoril event in Portugal, Belgrade organizers are keeping their wild cards available until the last possible moment.
Local media report that potential recipients could include Australian former No. 1 Lleyton Newitt - now not playing Davis Cup in India that week - former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis, and 2004 French Open champion Gaston Gaudio.

I sure hope Nole wins with Verdasco out. That would be humiliating if he failed. I find it a pity that no top tenners opted out of screwing with Federer's title defense though. I see any easier road to a nice title here.

Universon - in case you aren't aware, this is the tournament that used to be in Amersfoort, Netherlands. I guess the website programmers have not changed it yet.
RickyDimon , 4/28/09 1:10 AM
Ricky: in spite of all the hype following the announcement (which I recall you wrote about) until some 12 hours ago this event didnt feature in the TT list of events at all. I drew attention to this omission in a comment following your article but it obviously went unnoticed.
btw: This tournament is STILL not listed on the UK Eurosport Site.

Universon: We are well aware of the error and will fix it. It's not entered manually but has to do with Belgrade taking over after Amersfoort.
By the way, we do our best to make this a good website for you guys. We appreciate your feedback, but there's no need to make sarcastic comments.

Administrator:
Thanks for your explanation. I didn't mean to be sacracstic. Sorry that I expanded it little further than the scope of the site.
I believe that was a technical error, as explaind by Ricky above.
You guys keep up good work.
cheers!
Keep up good faith.
Universon , 4/28/09 9:09 AM
Universon: Your sarcasm on your first comment was uncalled for. All the people (Ricky, Cheryl, Moderators etc) work hard to make this a very nice site. What's more it's available for free.
Rude comments on a minor error will just reflect badly on yourself. If you continue this way, you'll loose credibility on the website. Let's use this place for constructive comments. We can all learn from each other, and have fun at the same time. Thanks!

What an invent Novak prepare for us, I was there yesterday, it's already great, feel so happy, I'll be part of it, looking forward, tournament starts, but the only problem could be the weather, forecast is not so promising, it's very windy and cloudy over there, I'm afraid, it could be rainy, anyway, hardly waiting to attend the matches and see all the guys coming in our capitol, Belgrade, Serbia, thanks to our national icon, for everything he's done so far in his young age, God blessed him...
gordana , 4/28/09 11:21 AM
Hey gordana thanks for the update. I hope the tournament goes really smoothly despite the weather - and gets better each year. Report back to us what happens please and I hope you have a great time there!

I personally think it is a great thing for Nole to have started this tournament. Many small tourneys have grown into larger ones. It takes time. But it also provides the home country a place for future tennis players to practice and train and learn. I am not sure (Gordana can correct me) but I doubt once the tour is over that the facility will not be used at all unless it is not a permanent move. If it is permanent, then that provides many kids the opportunity they might not have gotten before.
Sounds like the weather there is the same as in Rome Gordana!

will Murray accept wildcard in Belgrade given that he lost to Monaco in Rome - 2nd round?
posmatrac , 4/29/09 6:03 PM
is Belgrade a clay tournament?
Raindrops , 4/29/09 6:26 PM
He will play Madrid so there is no reason for him to play Belgrade
orion , 4/29/09 6:53 PM
Yes, Belgrade is a clay court tourney.

that's a good idea! Maybe Kolya and Ferrer should also consider excepting Belgrade's wild card. They have plenty of rest, and that should fill the hole in their schedule before Madrid.
Universon , 4/30/09 7:59 AM
Ohh, I just learnt that Kolya and Ferrer are already on the list in Estoril. However, i haven't seen Tsonga nor VERrdaSCO THERE.
Universon , 4/30/09 8:50 AM
posmatrac, I think you've made a joke with Murray's eventual appearance in Belgrade, anyhow, he's behaving like a big star, so I don't think he even think about it, he's so focused to get number 3, honestly, I don't care about him at all, and I won't miss him in Belgrade at all...
gordana , 4/30/09 8:54 AM
The only thing to change now is the flag, that's still the Dutch one on the Tournament Calendar, cheers
JBo , 4/30/09 7:27 PM
gordana ,
actually no, I read bbc tennis blog and someone claimed he accepted wild card in Bgd. It would have been nice to see Murray in Bgd y not?
posmatrac , 4/30/09 7:38 PM
Hate to say it but this tournament could have the worst field of the entire year outside of Delray Beach.
RickyDimon , 5/2/09 4:08 AM
JBo, 4/30/09 7:27 PM Tee hee! Very beady eyed of you.
ed251137 , 5/2/09 5:58 AM
The worst field was Johannesburg by far. Baghdatis was seeded by being no.98 or something.
orion , 5/2/09 1:38 PM
Baghdatis would be the second most interesting player in Belgrade. He was definitely not the second most interesting player in Joburg.
RickyDimon , 5/2/09 2:00 PM
There are other good players like Andreev and Stepanek too. Plus the field is more competitive here. It isnt that bad considering it shares a week with two other tournaments.
orion , 5/2/09 2:15 PM
Hrbaty d. M. Djokovic 6-1, 6-0

Geography was not your favouruteI am positive!!
Look at the map. You cannot confuse it even more. Just impossible.
Ohhh, well, at least you didn't miss the continent!! Congratualtions! Its' still Europe. You could said that it was some African country?? How about Belgrade in Botswana? Hugh? Or...Ivory Coast? Yeahhh...
Orrr...maybe, Great Britain? British wanted to occupy it anyway. So, Belgrade either in Germany or Great Britain. Period. If it's not, then it should be annexed ASAP!
