Cilic breezes into second round Marin Cilic secured a place in the second round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on Monday afternoon, dismissing wildcard Flavio Cipolla in straight sets.

The 15th seed took an early lead at 3-1, crushing his trademark forehand from the back of the court. Cilic quickly built two-break advantage, but could not capitalize on three set-point opportunities on the return of serve at 5-1. The Croat, surviving a slight hiccup serving for the set, saved two break points to earn his sixth set point. Cilic struck an unreturnable serve at 40-30, closing out the 45-minute set 6-2.

Cilic, looking solid on his own serve, jumped out to a two-break lead again in set two. The Croat, behind a dozen winners, held serve comfortably throughout the set to reach 5-1. He secured 12 of 13 first-serve points, never facing a break point in the set.

The World No. 15 extends his lead to 2-0 over Cipolla, having also ousted the Italian two weeks ago in Monte-Carlo. The 20-year old finished the day with five aces while converting four of 10 break-point chances. He saved three of three break points, never surrendering serve in the match.

Cilic will meet Christophe Rochus of Belgium in the second round.
