Former Australian tennis idol Patrick Rafter is being groomed for a possible future move into the Davis Cup captain's shoes, and is set to earn his coaching stripes in next year's world junior championships.
The two-time US Open winner is pondering his choices. "I'll go back and see if certain opportunities present themselves and see if Tennis Australia wants me. And if I've got the right time to do those things then, I might try and do something like that again as well."
The 36-year-old, who retired in 2001, has the blessing of Australian Open boss Craig Tiley. "Pat understands what it takes to be a great player and he can offer that expertise to all of our young players.
His sportsmanship, work ethic and humility are all the same qualities we want our young players to have."
Rafter stands with former Davis captain John Newcombe and Lleyton Hewitt as the only Aussie to have held the No. 1 ranking. He's also the only Australian in three decades to reach the semifinals of all four Grand Slams.
Rafter ended his career with a 21-11 Davis Cup record, missing out on the 1999 title over France due to injury, but playing on losing sides against Spain and France the following two years.

They couldn't hope for a better sportsman than Patrick to lead DC. And, so glad he's been playing on the Champions Tours. Love him!!!
