Richard Gasquet rallied from a set down to defeat Jan Hernych in three at the Barcelona Open on Tuesday.
France’s Richard Gasquet has been inactive for a month with injury. He missed two Masters events in Miami and Monte Carlo, but he is back in action in Barcelona. His ranking sits at 21st in the world, as he has struggled with results in 2009 so far.
The Czech Republic’s Jan Hernych is a tour veteran whose highest ever ranking is 60th in the world (he currently sits at No. 62). His best result of the year by far was a semifinal appearance in Zagreb, where he lost to Mario Ancic. Otherwise, he has had a series of first and second-round defeats.
Hernych was able to take advantage of the bit of rust in Gasquet’s game in the first set of their match. The Frenchman was broken twice as he adjusted to the feel of a clay court again (it is his first clay match of the year), though his first-serve percentage was healthy enough at 69%.
Once Gasquet found his stride, Hernych had no chance. Throughout the second and third sets, the Frenchman did not face a single break point, and he broke his opponent three times to put away the mostly routine win.
Gasquet will take on Christophe Rochus in round two on Wednesday.
