Next week's ATP event in Barcelona suffered a big blow when a pair of Frenchmen recently pulled out. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils are both sidelined with injuries.
"Les miserables." That would be an accurate description of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils at the moment.
The two oft-injured Frenchmen pulled out of next week's Open Banco Sabadell in Barcelona due to another dose of physical problems. Tsonga, who has missed significant time on the tour throughout his career with troubled knees, is experiencing knee pain once gain. Monfils is citing tendinitis in both knees.
With the clay season underway and the French Open rapidly approaching, this has to be a major concern for both players as well as French fans. Tsonga's agent, however, is doing his best to calm any fears.
"Jo is training in Geneva at the moment and felt something in his right knee," said Morgan Menahem. "He won't go to Barcelona as a precaution, but it's nothing to worry about." Menahem insisted that Tsonga is still good to go for the Masters Series Rome, which begins the following week.
Monfils, meanwhile, reached the 2008 French Open semifinals before falling to Roger Federer.
