  • Water-logged Thursday suspends play for Nadal

    4/17/09 1:49 AM | Kelli DeMario
Water-logged Thursday suspends play for Nadal World No. 1 Rafael Nadal completed just one game in his third-round encounter with Nicolas Lapentti on Thursday. Play is scheduled to resume at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters early Friday.

Defending champion Rafael Nadal, on course to capture his fifth title in Monaco, could play two matches in one day on Friday. The Spaniard reached 0-1 in Thursday’s battle with 32-year-old Ecuadorian Nicolas Lapentti before play was suspended for the day. The world No. 1 is first on the docket for Friday, eager to secure a place in the quarterfinal round for a fifth consecutive year.

Nadal came through his opening-round match easily, taking out veteran Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela 6-2, 6-3.

Should Nadal prevail against Lapentti Friday morning, he takes on the winner of the third-round match between Italian Simone Bolelli and Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia in a late-day, quarterfinal-round encounter. Bolelli and Ljubicic, sidelined by downpour, were unable to play a single point on Thursday.

Nadal holds a commanding 3-1 lead in the head to head series with the former world No. 3. He and Ljubicic last met on the clay at Roland Garros in 2006, with the Spaniard posting a straight-set semifinal victory, 6-4, 6-2, 7-6.

Nadal has bested the 41st-ranked Bolelli once, notching a round of 32 victory at the 2009 tournament in Rotterdam.

This is a general question that has been bantered around other message boards. I figure Kelli, Cheryl or Ricky would know. What determines the order of play, say the top half vs the bottom half and who determines what time a player plays? I am not referring to the current fiasco in MC, but the rules that apply to ALL the tourneys.

please..... rain did not supend rafa's play.the #2player that had a wild card played first so the #1 player that had won the toruney 4 times had to play second is the reason why rafa's play was suspended.
true rain played a part in the scheduling but don't get it twisted. If the organizers would have gave rafa the reconigition of being #1 and made him play first then things would have been different for rafa
Please, call it like you see it.

alik r u trying to blame Fed fr playing the tourney or the organizers fr nt making Rafa play first ? The way u put it contains a lot of hipocracy!

Max , 4/17/09 8:53 AM

how on earth is that fed's fault?! whtever it is..its highly unfortunate and unfair wid rafa!!!

vamosrafa , 4/17/09 11:19 AM

lapentti destroyed by rafa.......rafa is almost at its best now.....yeah vamosrafa me too....im from the 2nd most populated country in the world....nd it will become the most populated for sure....lolzzzzzzz

just love this rafa forehand.....he uses it like a whip,so so effective on clay......i dunno whoz gonna beat him here now...

it would take a highly spirited, unrelenting performance from either djokovic or murray to beat him here.....or maybe verdasco or wawrinka.......i think rafa is gonna win this again

vamosrafa , 4/17/09 12:52 PM

its a pity rafa is getting no rest at all.......the match would be even coz ljubicic has also played a tough match........two matches on the same day on clay can take a toll on the players...rafa will have to play again tommorow(if he wins today,again).....3 matches in two days......crazy.....
