  • Federer heads to practice courts to repair his game

    4/16/09 10:03 PM | Johan Lindahl
Federer heads to practice courts to repair his game Roger Federer has just over a week to fix his game after his Monte Carlo third-round exit to Swiss friend Stanislas Wawrinka, with urgent clay repairs required before the start in Rome a week from Monday.

"I haven't served my best throughout the season, so I have to make sure I get my serve going well for me because I just don't hit the spots when I really want to," said the Swiss of his action plan.

"Not that I expect 10 aces a set here on this type of heavy clay, but I just think it's something I need to work on, make sure my timing gets right, my footwork gets right, and my forehand, that I use it the right way."

Federer was generous in his loss to his Davis Cup teammate. It was only the third time in his career against nine victories against compatriots after losing twice in 2000 to Marc Rosset.

"I'm happy for him that he's progressed so much over the last couple of years," Federer said of Wawrinka. "He's finally making a push, you know, getting close to top players and beating top players like myself. I think it's great for him."

It was Wawrinka's first victory in three attempts over his Davis Cup teammate, who had lost the last three finals here to Rafael Nadal. "My forehand was hurting me in the beginning. I was making a few too many errors," said Federer after a day when start of play had been delayed by five hours because of heavy rain.

"That kind of gave him the advantage. It was unfortunate, but I thought Stan played well."

The defeat in just under two hours was Federer's earliest on clay since the French Open third round in 2004 against Gustavo Kuerten.

federer's game was always based on good serving......nd precision.....his forehand always used to land where he wanted to,federer has somewhat lost that "PRECISION"...HIS FOREHAND GOES ALL OVER THE PLACE SOMETIMES........hope he can improve..otherwise its gonna be tough for him to win all the time

vrael , 4/17/09 7:34 AM

So fed really know his serves forehands are nt working like old times. I wil ad he gotta check hs backhand too which sometimes even goes to the audience!

Max , 4/17/09 8:02 AM

max , the backhand in this last match hardly had any unforced errors . it was good . so i think he fixed that coming into this match . its the forehand misfiring now .

fedexfan , 4/17/09 8:17 AM

Like he says at least and his happy he lost to Wawrinka. Jason Goodall should not be a commentator he is SO negative, and NEVER has anything nice to say about Federer EVER!!!

fofe , 4/17/09 9:08 AM

fofe don't worry about Jason Goodall. The guy is a FIRST CLASS PRATT. Just treat him as a child, hey he is great entertainment value because he does not know what he is talking about. No. 247 in the ATP tennis rankings was his highest score, and he can commentate on tennis? He wouldn't know great tennis or great tennis players if they smacked him on the arse....He is hilarious. Not one person I know likes him because of his disrespect towards Federer and other players. He is just wishing he was like them. Horrible man.

Federer has one week now to sort himself out. He is leaving things later and later. His mindset must be tortured right now despite his comments to the contrary. The guy is in need of MAJOR INSPIRATION. I hope it comes to him.

malteser1 , 4/17/09 10:32 AM

Was the loss so bad that they couldnt print the score?? 6-4 7-5. The picture says it all. He has no answers.

Slicer , 4/17/09 11:12 AM

torres and others..whts wrong now?? only the forehand isnt working well so fed starts losing to so many players..where's taht all-court 'elegant' game !!! he ws supposed to have alot of variety and that variety shud hv helpd..in atleast winning a SET!!! Rafa finds a way to win on every surface even when he isnt playing near his best...best match player is nadal outdere!!! and once again wht the hell did federer mean by this ""That kind of gave him the advantage. It was unfortunate, but I thought Stan played well." all crap!! teh delay ws for both...the fading light at wimby ws unfair..the rain delay ws unfair!! wht else?!! is he a VIP who is supposed to get better treatment??!!

vamosrafa , 4/17/09 11:31 AM

vamosrafa.........federer's serve was below par......nd his forehand errors were much more to his liking....and wawrinka was playing solid......but yeah he should have fought more.....but even his variety of shots can not save him when his major weapons fail....federer widout his forehand and heavy serve is expected to lose

vrael , 4/17/09 11:43 AM

vamosrafa. It is strange that you pick the things in the presser from Roger that can be misinterpreted. He was HUGELY complimentary to Stan. He said that he wasn't playing his best, his footwork was wrong, his first serve was rubbish, his forehand let him down. That would give a No.13 player the advantage... Federer said he played a crap game and that Stan deserved to win. So why don't you print the whole interview rather than taking out a few words and twist them. My God.....
You are right. Federer is NOT playing well. He is declining vamos, that makes me feel sick. He needs to regroup and move on. And I wish for better days for him and I won't ever be disloyal to Federer. He is not the best player in the world. He can play amazing matches every now and then but not all the time and I guess I have to accept that. I still don't think he is over though Vamos. So go ahead and enjoy your moment of celebration, sad that you find such joy though in a player who is in difficult transitional times right now. But your time will come.

malteser1 , 4/17/09 11:45 AM

Who told abt rain delay?? Was dere such a staemnet frm Fed?

Max , 4/17/09 11:48 AM

malteser1 ,....buddy i wrote this becoz of sum1 who always has prblms wid whatevr rafa does and says....i know tht roger is a gr8 sportsman and is almost always gracious in defeat ..bt is there any need to utter statements like these...its alwasy for both players!!!shud stop doing this becoz he is already a role model for so many kids all ovr the world ! he is practicing now and thats the best solution...hope he plays better in rome so that he meets rafa!

vamosrafa , 4/17/09 12:20 PM

vamos....I don't have a problem with Nadal. AT ALL......He is a great player, deserving of No. 1. What I have a problem with is people like Gordana, Agf, Carrie, Raindrops ALWAYS celebrating any of Roger's losses...I cannot understand that. I really can't. I hate that type of unsportsmanship. It just craps the game. Gordana is so full of her own self-importance. Never accepts that anything is wrong with joker Nole. It's pathetic and I am supposed to keep quiet when they dis Roger? I don't think so. Yeah, bring on Rafa v Roger in Rome (the three R's.....may be a sign?), Roger is going to have to sort out his game though buddy cos right now, your man is streets ahead.

malteser1 , 4/17/09 12:38 PM

Roger's fans celebrate Rafa's losses so vice versa.

Don't worry folks, I'm sure Roger's fans enjoyed his elegance and beautiful shots even if they were way off target.

carrie , 4/17/09 12:52 PM

do you know what Carrie? I have NEVER celebrated a loss of Nadal's. So direct YOUR comments to the people who have. I respond to people like you who continually have a pop at Federer. And let's face it. You do it often and you enjoy it. Continue having a pop if it makes you feel better. Why don't you have a Federer party with AGF, Raindrops, disgusting Gordana and just enjoy yourselves cos that is all you are worthy of. Federer will remain the Greatest no matter what you say. Enjoy your moment.

malteser1 , 4/17/09 1:11 PM

Not in my eyes will Federer remain the greatest, obviously he will for people with rose tinted glasses.

carrie , 4/17/09 1:15 PM

This guys just like to gloat whenever they have the chance so let them. When Fed was on top during those 4 and a half years, I never cared if Nadal lost or won because I know Nadal was so far back in the rankings. So last year Fed was unlucky he got mono and lost in Wimby to Nadal in 5 sets. That must have taken all the momentum and confidence out of him. So now he just need to practice more and build it up again. It's good that Fed is hungry now for success and unlearn all the luxury he had during those 4 years of utter dominace and some occasional losses to Nadal. Fed at his best level is still better than Nadal at his best in other surfaces than clay.

torres9 , 4/17/09 1:19 PM

torres, get real!!!!!!! Occasional losses to Nadal..........13:6.

carrie , 4/17/09 1:37 PM

carrie...Get Real....13 GRAND SLAMS, 237 weeks at NO.1..Is anyone else EVER gonna dominate like Fed? I don't think so honey. Go read the tennis expert magazines and some tennis books to get on top of things. Then come back with some real news...I'll wait a bit longer until you can say something more intelligent. We live in hope.

malteser1 , 4/17/09 2:02 PM

Roger's fans live in La La land.

carrie , 4/17/09 2:46 PM

malteser, I've told you few times so far, WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE, you silly one, don't use bad words otherwise it'll be very hot between us, oh yeah, Novak won right now, great news, isn't it, you sick one, most probably you don't feel very well at the moment, but buddy, that's the fact, Federer is OUT, Novak is IN, buy, buy,,,

gordana , 4/17/09 3:21 PM

the mono xcuse confirms that torres is suffering from heavy mental disorder!! I have alreadt proved it sumwhere in the previous articles that roger ws almost at his best at wimby 08..torres as usual ran away like a chicken ..didnt reply!! now he is stating it again...that mono xcuse is so stupid! nadal suffered from heavy knee tendinitis in US 07...had he been fresh he wud have won it!! then hsi momentum ws slowed down ...thast why he lost to tsogna so badly in Aus open semi!!! now i understand ...thnx tores for this logic..then rafa wasnt feeling good i think thats why he allowed federer to hang in there for 5 sets in wimby...his momentum is still to rebuild...so wait tores...am i rite na??

vamosrafa , 4/17/09 3:40 PM

gordana...congratulations to your boy. He won. Not a magical match. But am sure you will be hitting the beer again. I don't run away when my man loses Gordana, I am happy to move on and to regroup. I watch my language honey. You stop being so insulting about Federer and you will have grown up in my eyes. The more you continue to disrespect my favourite player, you just create more battles between us. It is about time that Nole got his act together, afterall he has murray on his back who could still take his no. 2 position away from him. Nole is scared right now which is why he is playing some decent tennis. Please don't call me silly. So childish. I feel fine actually, thanks for asking. Federer is out, you are correct. I am hoping he goes away to find answers to come back stronger. Enjoy your moment Gordana, for as long as it lasts. Have a beer for me too.

malteser1 , 4/17/09 3:55 PM

vamosrafa
"the mono xcuse confirms that torres is suffering from heavy mental disorder!!"

You are soooo right! LOL

danny , 4/17/09 4:11 PM

A bad loss to Wawrinka. I wish I could say it was surprising but it wasn't. No doubt the serve and forehand need to be better if he's going to make any noise on clay. It seems like he's taken a step backwards when almost everyone else is moving forward in the top 20. He needs to get his game back but what's it going to take?

JordanJabbar , 4/17/09 4:22 PM

Joja, yeah, I know. Just been listening to some of the sports commentators right now, and they are saying that Fed is probably No. 3 or No. 4 in reality for the exact reason of what you have stated above. Everyone is evolving ,changing their game. Federer is stuck in a time zone, 2 years ago. He isn't the best anymore and believe me that hurts to say that. I love the man. He is my idol in so many ways. There are no excuses left for Federer. It is simple. He needs a coach/sports psychologist and a huge dose of reality, otherwise he is going to slide further down the rankings and that would be a terrible sight for me. In my eyes he will always be the best tennis player ever, but right now he is in a funk, big time.

malteser1 , 4/17/09 4:46 PM

Lets have a party. I think anyone has a right to celebrate whether its a loss or a win. Unfortunately, you think its all about Federer, so that's your problem. And btw, was it just your opinion that he's the greatest, no matter what?

samprallica , 4/17/09 4:54 PM

sampra, are you directing that comment to me? Personal opinion buddy. I love federer. He is in a funk. I would like him to come out of it. He has been a great ambassador for the sport. There are too many people on this site that hate him. I don't know why. What has he ever done other than play (mostly) magical tennis? In my opinion, yes, he is the greatest and he ALWAYS will be sampra. I like the idea of a party...and the right to celebrate our players. What I don't like is vile comments coming from the nasties, gordana, carrie, agf, and raindrops....for agf to wish cancer and to die on Federer? How can that be a nice thing to say sampra? I would NEVER wish that on any one. Tennis is a fabulous sport, I love it. Go send your invite to a party to these guys and see what they say.

malteser1 , 4/17/09 5:00 PM

I can't wait what "mental case torres" would say about this.
Honestly though, I felt quite sad that the beautiful rivalry between rafa and fed is coming to an end.

danny , 4/17/09 5:07 PM

I've written this before but it bears repeating. (and please keep your flames out unless you are prepared to read carefully and think about it first :-)

Federer's game has been sublime a great deal of the time until and mostly through 2007. But he had a number of shocking losses that year, in great contrast to 2006. In 2008, by the FO he was supposed to be in excellent shape again, well over the mono. His loss there was to someone whose level on the red powder was two levels higher that year. At Wimbledon Federer was also in excellent shape, and his loss came in a match that was almost over in 3 or 4 sets, and where both players played at very similar levels to each other.

I will never cease to admire Federer. He will surely give us a lot more to admire so long as he is playing the circuit.

When it comes to his interviews, now, if you take the entire interview each time, and since he started to lose more often throughout 2007, more often than not after a loss he will seem to give sufficient credit to the opponent while taking a lot of it back at the same time (back-handed compliments almost). And he will attribute most of the loss to conditions, not quite doing this and that, handing over a set, and so on. Instead of saying: the opponent played amazing. Or saying: the opponent played better, I played less well.

So why is that? I think that after his years of glory and oftentimes being levels above his opponents Federer's character today makes it difficult for him to be genuinely gracious and humble and nothing but... rather than being a mixture. Some have said that is the attitude he needs to keep his fighting spirit strong and they very well may be right.

In my mind I tend to separate Federer's performance on court from his words after losses. The latter are understandable but not altogether commendable.

chlorostoma , 4/17/09 6:00 PM

perhaps he should relax a bit, i'm sure Nole has a spot for Fed in his new commercial :)

posmatrac , 4/17/09 6:16 PM

nice post chlorostoma...........i agree wid u

vrael , 4/17/09 6:18 PM

Me too, chlorostrama. Also, although his mother's South African I don't know if English is his first language or not, but if it isn't, no matter how great a linguist he is, conveying meaning is not the same.

deuce , 4/17/09 6:25 PM

Chlorostoma.....Amen!!!!

You hit the nail right on the head!! But in my own words.....Federer needs a very large slice of humble pie!

For those who say negative things about Fed, I am not so sure that the hate him or that they are bad people......i just think its his attitude that brings on this negative karma.

I am a die hard Nadal fan.......and I will be honest......i was so happy when Rafa started beating Fed because his success HAD gotten to his head, and Federer really needed to get down a rung or two!!

Now he cant cope with these losses and they are spiralliing out of control because he REFUSES to adjust his ATTITUDE!!! Its arrogance and stubborness.....whether we like it or not!!!! A little less flicking of the hair....and a little more tweaking of his game would do him a world of good.....and he had better hurry becos tennis is not much fun without the Rafa/Roger rivalry!!

In short, Federer's greatness has become his own demise!!......and that is a sad FACT!!!

MonaLisa , 4/17/09 7:31 PM

And by the way...torres9....you mentioned about 'these guys just like to gloat'?!!

Well you guys had 4 1/2 years to gloat....so i think now its our time and we still have at least 3 1/2 years to go!!!

MonaLisa , 4/17/09 7:48 PM

Aptly said MonaLisa.
Now give me that smile.
Pardon the pun please.

danny , 4/17/09 8:07 PM

Thank you for your kind comments., all.

deuce,
I really do not think that Federer's competence in English is a barrier to making himself understood perfectly. His English is nearly flawless. It's clear, even just from listening to him speak in a single interview, that he's been using it actively and very frequently from an early age, that it's a very natural language for him. Sorry, no excuse there :-)

chlorostoma , 4/17/09 10:29 PM

Unfortunately Federer has had difficult opponents, unlike Nadal, who got the easy ones to play against!!

fofe , 4/18/09 12:30 AM

Okay Fofe........

Unfortunaltely Nadal has had difficult opponents thats why he has not won more than 6 Grandslams......unlike Federer, who got the easy ones to play against, hence why he's won 13!!!........duh!!!!

MonaLisa , 4/18/09 12:46 AM

All of these losses have been ugly, it's not Federer at his best. To "fofe" who said Nadal's getting an easy draw. What are you on? Rafa is a machine, what he did during the hardcourt season was unbelievable, just ask Murray, Verdasco, and Federer. Everybody better duck and cover because it's Nadal on clay!

JordanJabbar , 4/18/09 1:05 AM

I can tell you when Roger won USO a couple of years ago, he actually was misunderstood by the American crowd. It was just the way he phrased his words. Came across not as he intended at all.

Now, about Rafa. He is indeed a machine. I was going to tell you who he reminded me of, but decided against since I think Rafa fans will take as an insult when that wouldn't have been my intention at all. Suffice it to say he is indeed a physical and mental specimen. I can't imagine him not winning 5th RG. BTW, which star is green - Wimby?

Some advice to Rafa . . . don't go winning every single tourney (not talking about the slams) if you are miles ahead in the points - then you don't have to defend as many points as Roger did year in and year out. I think he was a somewhat victim of his own success.

Have a great weekend all!

Rafterfan , 4/18/09 1:16 AM

FEFO please list the people who Nadal played at AO, Rotterdam and Indian wells.... and answer me this question are these guys not the most dangerous opponents (or some of the most dangerous opponents) on rd court. Actually let me make it easier for your I will right the list you can do the research.

Tsonga
Nalbandian
Federer (AO final)
Murray
Verdasco (on a good day obviously check AO semis nd Quarter final)
Gael Monflis
Gille Simon

(And you think Nadal has had an easy run. lol. If you know anything about these players you would not be making such presumptuous statements. Like i said in my other post to you do your research don't just make statements that have no meaning or validity)

TopDog , 4/18/09 1:57 AM

Some people make me chuckle with their crazy comments. At least watch the games before spouting complete nonsense.

Bundy , 4/18/09 2:08 AM

RAFTERFAN most of Nadals fans will not be insulted if what you want to say is in jest and your intentions is not to make fun or degrade Nadal like some individuals on this website. So..... you have got me really interested as to who or what machine Nadal reminds you of. PLEASE feel free to SPEAK your mind.
