Stanislas Wawrinka needed three sets to dispatch Martin Vassallo-Arguello of Argentina on Wednesday afternoon.
Switzerland’s second best player, Stanislas Wawrinka, came out completely flat for the first set and a half of play. Vassallo Arguello was able to take advantage of Wawrinka’s 47% first serve percentage. The Argentine earned six break-point chances and he won almost 70% of the points on Wawrinka’s second serve. Vassallo Arguello was able to secure two service breaks to take the first set.
The second set did not start much better for the Swiss. Vassallo Arguello jumped out to an early lead, and had 15-40 at 5-3 on Wawrinka’s serve. Wawrinka fought off the two match points and clawed his way to a hold of serve. The missed opportunity seemed to throw the Argentine off his game. Wawrinka reeled off four games in a row to squeak out the second set.
Wawrinka was as dominant in the third set as Vassallo Arguello had been in the first. He closed out the match with a two-break advantage. He will take on countryman and sometimes doubles partner Roger Federer.

This may sound weird, but I think Stan the Man needs to have his back against the wall to get his act together. Slow starter, I guess. Anywho, it'll be entertaining to see the countrymen play.
