David Ferrer crushes Marc Gicquel in straight sets on Wednesday afternoon. Ferrer, who will face Fernando Verdasco, is joined in the third round by Albert Montanes.
David Ferrer rolled over Marc Gicquel in rapid time, crushing the 32-year-old Frenchman 6-0, 6-1 in 49 minutes on Wednesday afternoon. The convincing win sets up a third-round blockbuster between Ferrer and fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.
You can bet that one will be far competitive than the second-round thrashing Ferrer put on Gicquel. Outclassing his opponent from all over the court, Ferrer dropped just seven points in his first four service games and did not face a single break point in the first set.
The No. 10 seed seized an immediate break in the opening game of set two and never looked back. In fact it would be hard for anyone to dominate a set more than Ferrer dominated the second on Wednesday afternoon. He lost a mere five points in the 6-0 drubbing, including just two in three return games.
Ferrer's countryman Albert Montanes also cruised into the third round with little difficulty, although certainly with more difficulty than Ferrer. Montanes eased past Monaco's own Jean-Rene Lisnard, who got a wild card into the main draw and dispatched Christophe Rochus in round one. Lisnard was not as fortunate against a much tougher opponent, going down to Montanes 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 21 minutes.
Montanes only put in 54 percent of his first serves and got broken twice, but the world No. 36 got looks at a whopping 13 break points throughout the proceedings. He converted five of those, which was more than enough to set up a third-round encounter with third-seeded Novak Djokovic.
