Juan Monaco got revenge for his loss in the final of Buenos Aires with a straight set victory over Spaniard Tommy Robredo. Martin Vassallo Arguello joined Monaco with a win of his own.
Juan Monaco def. Tommy Robredo 6-2, 6-4
In a day of upsets, Juan Monaco joined in the fray with a surprisingly easy straight-set victory over Tommy Robredo. Monaco staved off three break points and went 2 for 2 on break point opportunities to breeze through the first set. The second set dished up five breaks of serve. Robredo continued to be uncharacteristically sloppy on big points, and even securing two breaks against Monaco was not enough to even the match and send it to a third set. Monaco will take on Andreas Beck, who surprised Gilles Simon in their second round match.
Martin Vassallo Arguello def. Igor Andreev 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-2
Russia’s Igor Andreev was up in this match 6-2, 5-4 and had 40-0 to seal the match win. The Russian quite simply fell apart completely. Vassallo Arguello managed to get the break back, then just sneaked out the second set tiebreak 7-5. Vassallo Arguello played well enough to keep pressure on Andreev in third set, and the Russian’s game continued to disintegrate. Vassallo Arguello pocketed another two breaks of serve and faced none on his own serve. The Argentine will take on Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka in the second round.
