Croatia’s Marin Cilic dispatched Italian clay-courter Flavio Cipolla in two easy sets on Monday in Monte Carlo.
Marin Cilic took advantage of dreadful form from Flavio Cipolla to post his first clay-court match win of 2009. Cilic did not play the cleanest match of his career; the Croat posted 36 unforced errors and only 18 winners – but it was enough to get the job done on Monday.
Cipolla was completely off his game. The Italian made a grand total of three winners through two sets of tennis and he donated 30 errors to Cilic’s cause. Cipolla, however, had two good wins in the qualifying round. He beat fellow Italian Potito Starace and Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen to earn his spot in the main draw, but the playing level he enjoyed this weekend simply was not with him in this opening-round encounter.
Cilic will move on to the second round where he awaits the winner of Tomas Berdych and qualifier Fabio Fognini.
