Novak Djokovic will not have an easy road to the Masters Series Monte-Carlo semifinals this week. His section of the draw includes--among others--Fernando Verdasco and David Ferrer.
Novak Djokovic is coming off a solid runner-up finish at the Sony Ericsson Open, and he will have to remain in fine form if he wants to make back-to-back appearances in the final weekend of Masters Series events. The world No. 3 is in a quarter of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters draw that is also home to several outstanding clay-courters.
The good news is for Djokovic is that at least one of his two biggest threats in the section--Fernando Verdasco and David Ferrer--will be gone prior to the quarterfinals. Verdasco, seeded seventh, and Ferrer, the No. 10 seed, are on a collision course for the third round. Djokovic, meanwhile, will have a tough third-round clash of his own, assuming he advances to that stage. Nicolas Almagro is a force on the slow stuff and won a recent title on the clay courts of Acapulco. If the Spaniard can survive countryman and fellow clay-court specialist Albert Montanes in round one, a third-round showdown with Djokovic is likely.
Of course, don't look past the early stages of this section. In addition to Almagro-Montanes, another scorching all-Spanish first-round tilt features Ferrer against Feliciano Lopez. Even though it's a tough matchup for Ferrer, he should take it since Lopez is one of the few Spaniards who actually prefers faster surfaces over clay. Also watch out for Julien Benneteau, a potential second-round opponent for Djokovic. His game does not look ideal for clay, but the Frenchman reached the quarterfinals of the French Open in 2006 and made it back to the fourth round last season.
Verdasco, too, will have no cakewalk in his tournament opener. The Spaniard--yes, another one in this part of the draw--opens against Philipp Kohlschreiber, who routed Ernests Gulbis 6-1, 6-3 on Sunday. The 34th-ranked German has gotten the better of Verdasco in three of their five previous meetings.

Since when is Verdasco a claycourter?
People these days are so ignorant and declare anyone from Spain a claycourt specialist...I mean have any of rhe won anything meaningful on clay (masters, RG)?
No...thought so......
Nole will clean them all up.
there are only 3 clay specialists at the moment:Nadal, Federer and Novak, Murray may join them, he is yet to prove himself.
noleisthebest , 4/12/09 9:36 PM
umm...noleisthebest, i love nole too, but didnt ferrer just beat him in straight sets on clay?
stu , 4/12/09 10:02 PM
noleisthebest - just because Verdasco is better than Djokovic on clay does not mean that Verdasco is a clay-court specialist. He is NOT a clay-court specialist. But he is better - relatively - than Djokovic on it.
RickyDimon , 4/12/09 10:38 PM
I can see you are trying to keep your thread alive by winding me up with this ridiculous argument, try something brainier net time, ricky...I mean REALLY!
noleisthebest , 4/12/09 11:34 PM
it's your thread - you started the discussion. regards.
RickyDimon , 4/12/09 11:45 PM
noleisthebest,
the guy exists to denounce Nole, why discuss that with him, just ignore ...
posmatrac , 4/13/09 12:51 AM
I don't see how Verdasco is better than Novak on clay either.
Novak was the only one who tested Rafa on clay last year (Rafa did lose one match - to Ferrero - due to injury). He has a few titles on clay, including a Masters. He grew up on clay contrary to, say, Murray who has no decent results on the surface so far.
Stu,
indeed, Nole lost to David in that match but you have to take few things into consideration. He was the last one to arrive to Spain and pretty much had only one or two training sessions on that court. He has just won Dubai (over Ferer). He simply did not have time to adjust to the surface that was way slower. Nole performed much better on Sunday and although he lost in straits too, his game was pretty much on par with Rafa's. Needless to say, it was a Davis Cup tie IN SPAIN. It wasn't David's superior play but Nole's terrible one that ultimately gave us the winner of that match.
I am pretty optimistic when it comes to Novak's clay court season.

Verdasco is better on clay "relative" to Djokovic. Djokovic is better than Verdasco on ALL surfaces, but he the difference between the two is SMALLEST on clay, since it is Verdasco's favorite surface (maybe TIED with hard courts), whereas it is definitely NOT Djokovic's favorite surface.
RickyDimon , 4/13/09 3:02 AM
Then how come the guy (Verdasco) looses 4 years in a row his opening match in Monte Carlo (on his favorite surface)?
HogarTheHorrible , 4/13/09 3:53 AM
Hogar - for the same reason that he lost in countless first rounds of other tournaments prior to the end of 2008. Prior to that, Verdasco was a huge headcase--and being a headcase usually translates to all surfaces.
RickyDimon , 4/13/09 4:03 AM
ok
karma rocks remember in Rome last year when he played two sick players to only play wawrinka in the final..........................lets see if he deserves it now
tennislover , 4/13/09 8:59 AM
According to some 'specialist' Novak has lost his way in tennis, he would never be good enough for them, in spite of FACT, he's in the top, they always find something which is bothering them, all the players are specialists on some grounds, but Novak is not, he is there by chance, silly people, as usually, just an empty stories, nothing else, keep going Nole, you're smart enough to deal with challenges all the time.
I've already digested this story.
gordana , 4/13/09 9:30 AM
Wow goranada?????.you broke my heart but its not our fault that you have chosen to cheer for hateful person, you could've done better
Never too late though!
tennislover , 4/13/09 10:48 AM
don't misinterpret my name, you smarty one, I'm not having joke with yours even you present yourself with nick name, and it's not appropriate for you, basically, you're not tennis lover in general, cause your threads could be very biased, full of bad words for certain players, so declare yourself finally, don't use nick names which are not suitable for you...
gordana , 4/13/09 11:41 AM

tennislover , 4/13/09 11:49 AM
go and check your mental health, you're tennis hater, by the way, Novak won't be able to sleep tonight, cause you hate him, silly one, considering myself, I can't stand people like you, and if somebody ask you, why hate about people you even don't know in person, you wouldn't find certain answer, cause, most probably you're so unsuccessful in your own life, for instance, I can't stand Federer, but I never said, I hate him, cause I don't have any single reason for hate, I don't know him at all, but in comparison with you, I'm very healthy person...
gordana , 4/13/09 12:29 PM
i hurt your feelings because i said i hate him, how romantic, seriously!
i hope that the two of you will date soon you will make a sick cute couple!
by the way i hold a master degree so dont worry about me i have a very succesful life! try to raise you IQ level before talking to me or to tailk about Federer.......... Jerk
tennislover , 4/13/09 1:34 PM
I suggest you should learn what karma is before talking about it
orion , 4/13/09 1:43 PM
if you have a master degree, I'm Pulitzer award winner, educated persons don't have an attitude like you, about home education and IQ I even don't wanna a talk, by the way, I've finished secondary economic school, and I'm proud of my general knowledge, and nothing less intelligent than others, regarding dating with Novak, only I can tell you, you're sick-minded creature, cause, I could be his mother, and even if I am younger, I'd be more than proud to be with such an smart, young, successful athlete like Novak is, sick relationships I left for you, regarding Crying Baby what I could tell you, you're most probably like him, crying like a woman, and deep in his mind very aggressive person, who don't understand, his time has gone with wind. OK. Mr. false IQ, regards from me and Nole...
gordana , 4/13/09 2:50 PM
i liked the part where you send me regard in behave of your boy ,that was your up point
what you said explains alot:you and his mother have alot in common.
i was not raised to talk un proprley with an old lady.sure didnt feel it from the way you sopke earlier the calling names and stuff,i dont think it suit your age,i think your the type that lives with thousands cat at home.so it is not my fault.becuase if your old enough to be his mother that means your old enough to be my mother!
take care
tennislover , 4/13/09 3:22 PM
Send my regards to your mother, and tell her, she missed a lot of things to do raising her sick-minded son, with a luck of home and life education, what to do, it's not so easy to you, you have wish to be normal sometimes, I'd love to have your brain for several weeks, to get some rest, sit and think, before you speak.
gordana , 4/13/09 3:31 PM
Ricky, I don't agree that clay isn't a good surface for Djokovic. He learned to play on clay. In the last two years, he was among the three best players on it, last year probably the second, behind Rafa.
His problem is not clay, where he can beat anybody (except Rafa), but his overall level in the last months, his consistency and confidence. I think that he could improve and find again his top level on such surface.
Merlin , 4/13/09 5:32 PM
Merlin - I didn't say that clay isn't a good surface for Djokovic. I agree that he is good on clay. I am simply saying that he is not as good on clay RELATIVE to Verdasco. If they play against each other, I will pick Djokovic. But I think Ferrer will beat Verdasco, and Ferrer vs. Djokovic is a different story.
RickyDimon , 4/13/09 5:53 PM
ricky -
I must be missing something here. Last year Nando went out in Round 1 and Nole made it to the final. Nole won in Rome while Nando only made it to the Round of 16. Nole made to SFs of the French Open while Nando again only made the Round of 16.
Please explain the basis of your contention that Nando is better on clay than Nole.
alex , 4/13/09 6:49 PM
Alex - Never said that Nando is better on clay than Nole. I know it's an honest mistake, but please re-read the discussion thread before putting words into my mouth. Thanks.
