Lleyton Hewitt's camp is pressing for more detail on security arrangements for what it feels is a danger-fraught Davis Cup zonal tie against India on the unstable subcontinent.
Hewitt's manager in Melbourne is leading the campaign to see how security stacks up for the May 8-10 competition, now set for Chennai. While the mega-metropolis holds an ATP event each January, it was also the scene of a bloody seaborne attack on hotels in November by Islamic militant which killed more 100.
The ITF has sent a team to assess the security situation, but no recommendations have yet been forthcoming, a fact which grates on Australia. "The players are getting a little frustrated because they want to know what's going on," said manager David Drysdale to local media.
"It's not Tennis Australia's fault, the ITF are the ones dragging the chain. I hope they hurry up and advise what they're doing, and that they're not deliberately taking their time to make a decision inevitable.
"We need to protect Lleyton because, being a former world No. 1, he's going to be the highest-profile player there. We've got to be careful about that as well."
But the manager added that the decision to play should be left to each player. "Is there a safe place over there at the moment with the elections coming up? And a national sporting team like Australia coming? Nothing could happen, but is it really worth the risk?"
Indian Premier League cricket has gone to South Africa as a result of the security situation in the region after an armed attack on the touring Sri Lankan cricket team in Pakistan.
