American Wayne Odesnik reaches his first ATP World Tour final, defeating German Bjorn Phau in the semifinals of the US Men’s Clay Court Championship on Saturday.
The American took a 3-1 lead in the first set, following a wild forehand error from the German. Odesnik survived several hiccups on serve, saving multiple break points at 4-1. Phau, looking to close the gap at 3-4, brought the set to parity after a dropshot error from Odesnik. The unseeded Odesnik converted his first set point at 5-4 on the Phau serve, the German striking a sixth forehand error. Odesnik closed the 6-4 set with three aces, winning 16 of 23 points on his first serve.
Odesnik took advantage of an error-prone Phau, quickly snagging a 3-1 advantage in set two. The American, looking solid from the back of the court, secured a second break of serve to lead 5-1. The world No. 100, surrendering one of the breaks while serving for a place in the finals, held on to finish it 6-3.
Odesnik converted four of eight break-point oppotunities in the contest. He turned in a steady performance on serve, winning 30 of 43 first-serve points and firing seven aces in the match.
The 23-year old, a semifinalist at the US Clay Court Championships in 2008, awaits the winner of the semifinal match between Lleyton Hewitt and Evgeny Korolev.
